California Residents Targeted By AMBER Alert Phone Scam

California Highway Patrol warns of scammers posing as AMBER Alert representatives to gather personal information.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has issued urgent warnings to California residents about a new phone scam perpetrated by fraudsters posing as AMBER Alert representatives. Scammers are reportedly calling residents, claiming to offer registration for their children under the AMBER Alert system. The CHP stated, "This is NOT how the AMBER Alert system works!" stressing the importance of public awareness against these fraudulent activities.

According to multiple reports, these scammers request sensitive personal information from unsuspecting individuals and often ask to meet them at their homes. This deceitful tactic is part of the scam aimed at gaining access to confidential data.

The CHP is clear: there is no registration process for the AMBER Alert system. AMBER Alerts, established through laws enacted by Congress following the tragic kidnapping and murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman in Texas, serve to swiftly inform the public about child abductions. Only authorized law enforcement agencies can activate AMBER Alerts, and it has been consistently stated by the CHP, “never provide personal information or answer calls from unknown or 'possible scam' numbers.”

Adding to the alarm, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) has reported similar incidents, particularly targeting Hispanic communities. They remind residents to stay vigilant, as there is no legitimate process for registering children for the AMBER Alert system. The SMCSO confirmed, "Only law enforcement agencies can activate an Amber Alert and there is no registry," reinforcing the need for public caution.

The CHP took to social media platforms to communicate their message, highlighting the actions of these scammers who ask for confidential information and propose family meetings. Their post included the instruction, “This is not how the AMBER Alert system works!” reinforcing the urgency and necessity for residents to be wary.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious calls to their local law enforcement agencies, like the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office at 805-781-4540, or directly to the CHP. The authorities continue to advise the community to be aware of their personal information security and refrain from engaging with unknown numbers.

This recent wave of attempts at exploiting public trust surrounding child safety measures is concerning. It serves as a sobering reminder of the lengths to which fraudsters will go to manipulate and take advantage of community members. Law enforcement's clear guidelines are intended to empower, instructing citizens to maintain vigilance, especially when approached by unexpected communication promising child safety measures.

Notably, the AMBER Alert system's essence is to protect children. Scammers undermining this trust not only threaten personal security but the overall integrity of child safety initiatives. Community members are urged to share this information among friends and family to help spread awareness about the dangers of these scams.

Failure to recognize these deceitful schemes could lead to disastrous consequences, including personal data theft. Law enforcement agencies continue to remind the public: "If contacted by a scammer, report it to your local law enforcement agency immediately." This proactive approach is key to preventing potential threats.

Public safety remains the priority, and by staying informed, residents can contribute to the community's overall security. The CHP and SMCSO are dedicated to protecting the public and ensuring such fraudulent activities are addressed before they escalate. Ensuring families are informed and cautious can significantly reduce the effectiveness of these scams.
