California DMV Extends Hours For Real ID Appointments

With the May 7 deadline approaching, DMV offices offer early appointments to assist residents in obtaining Real IDs.

As the deadline for obtaining a Real ID approaches, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is taking proactive measures to assist residents. Starting April 14, 2025, select DMV offices across the state will extend their hours to help Californians secure this essential identification before the federal enforcement deadline of May 7, 2025.

Under the new regulations, beginning May 7, all travelers aged 18 and older will need a Real ID or another federally approved form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. This requirement, mandated by Congress in 2005, has faced multiple delays, and now time is running out for those who have yet to obtain their Real IDs.

To ease the rush, DMV Director Steve Gordon expressed enthusiasm about the extended hours. "We’re excited to offer Californians earlier hours this spring and summer," he stated. "These additional appointments will make it easier than ever to obtain a REAL ID." The DMV offices will open an hour earlier than usual—at 7 a.m.—on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, through June 27, 2025. However, these early slots will be available by appointment only and reserved specifically for Real ID applicants.

In San Diego County, four DMV locations are participating in this initiative: San Diego (Clairemont), Poway, El Cajon, and San Marcos. Residents can schedule appointments at these locations from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on the designated days. The regular operating hours for DMV offices are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.

To obtain a Real ID, applicants must apply online and upload the necessary documents before making an appointment. This includes providing one document for proof of identity and two documents for proof of residency in California. The DMV has emphasized the importance of bringing original documents, as photocopies will not be accepted. The cost for obtaining a Real ID is $35, the same as a traditional driver’s license.

Officials recommend that residents start the process online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov. By doing so, the in-person visit should take only about 15 minutes, streamlining the process significantly. "By starting the process online, it should take only about 15 minutes in the office," the DMV stated in a written announcement.

As the deadline draws near, U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials are also urging residents to check their identification. Kathleen Connon, the TSA Security Director at San Diego International Airport, advised, "Now is the time for anyone age 18 years and older to take an inventory of what forms of photo identification you have that are accepted by TSA once REAL ID enforcement begins."

For those who already possess a federally approved document, such as a U.S. passport, the DMV assures that there is no immediate rush to obtain a Real ID. Residents can wait until their driver’s license or ID is due for renewal to make the switch.

The Real ID is easily identifiable by a gold-colored bear-and-star logo located at the upper right corner of the identification card. As the May 7 deadline approaches, it is crucial for Californians to ensure they have the proper identification to avoid any disruptions in their travel plans or access to secure government facilities.

In summary, the California DMV is making significant efforts to accommodate residents seeking Real IDs before the enforcement deadline. With extended hours and online application options, obtaining a Real ID has never been more accessible. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to ensure they have the necessary identification in time.
