Caldas Novas: A Rising Star In Brazilian Tourism

Despite recent safety concerns, the city shines for its thermal delights and cultural offerings.

Tourism growth and safety concerns recently intersected in Caldas Novas, Goiás, as the famous hot springs city struggles with rising visitor numbers alongside alarming incidents. A young woman, working at a local store, reported sexual harassment at the hands of a 38-year-old man who entered the establishment and made unwanted advances. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, December 21, has highlighted the need for increased safety measures for tourists visiting this popular destination.

The victim, aged 24, sought assistance from the police after feeling threatened by the suspect's actions. Following her report, local authorities quickly located the man nearby and took him to the station for questioning, ensuring immediate attention to the case. The situation not only serves as a reminder of safety concerns amid tourist booms but also emphasizes the importance of having protective measures for visitors.

Despite this troubling incident, Caldas Novas continues to flourish as one of the leading destinations for tourism in Brazil. Recent announcements recognized the city, along with three others from Goiás—Goiânia, Rio Quente, and Pirenópolis—on December 18. This accolade, part of the Mapa do Turismo Brasileiro, reflects Caldas Novas’ growing significance with over 6,000 jobs created around tourism and associated industries.

Fabrício Amaral, the president of Goiás Turismo, celebrated the achievement, stating, "Tourism impact is substantial, with over 6,000 jobs and significant economic contributions," underlining the economic benefits driven by tourism-related activities. With 276 accommodation establishments reported across these tourist cities, the total revenue and job creation mark notable advancements for the region.

Nevertheless, as Goiás solidifies its status as a premier tourist hub, challenges remain. The COVID-19 pandemic’s residual effects are still being felt, but the outlook remains optimistic, with expectations for increased visitors and professional formalization within the tourism sector. Caldas Novas and Rio Quente are particularly celebrated for their natural hot springs and attractions, ensuring their status among Brazil's most sought-after leisure spots.

To navigate the wonders of Caldas Novas, influencer Guilherme Tin has recently made waves with his light-hearted 'survival guide' for visitors, cheekily dubbing the area as the "Las Vegas do Cerrado." His guide showcases the fun, quirky experiences available for those hoping to indulge the senses and soak up the turf.

Guilherme advises starting the day early, recommending visitors hit the famed thermal pools between 6 AM and 10 AM for the ultimate experience of tranquility. "Making the most of the stillness before the party begins is key!" he quips. For thrill-seekers, he suggests arriving early to beat the crowds at popular water slides starting around 9:30 AM, providing the perfect start to any tourist's adventurous day.

After taking part in the exhilarating water activities, he encourages guests to savor regional cuisine by enjoying lunch at one of the numerous restaurants. No meal would be complete without dessert—a nod goes to the local ice cream parlors, where delicious treats await, even during the mild 26°C rainy spells.

When night falls, the hot water pools also deserve attention, with some reaching astonishing temperatures of 62°C. "You feel entirely safe because it seems impossible for any germ to survive at those levels," he humorously adds, emphasizing relaxation after a day filled with excitement.

For the ultimate day wind-down, Guilherme insists on visiting the Feira da Lua, where culinary delicacies and artisanal products coalesce amid vibrant cultural attractions. He relays the joy of experiencing the iconic Carreta Furacão—an evening delight every tourist should prioritize.

With such charismatic tips, Guilherme sums up his affinity for Caldas Novas proudly, asserting, "I never went to Las Vegas, but I think I prefer Caldas Novas," capturing the charm of this rising tourist pillar amid the challenges it faces.

While incidents of harassment like the one reported are alarming, they should not overshadow the remarkable potential and vibrancy of Caldas Novas. The city’s alluring combination of culture, adventure, and relaxation continues to beckon tourists from far and wide, ensuring its place as one of Brazil’s top destinations.
