Cal Fire Employee Arrested For Setting Multiple Fires

Robert Hernandez faces arson charges for igniting five blazes during the summer months

A troubling incident unfolded recently when Robert Hernandez, a 38-year-old apparatus engineer for Cal Fire, was arrested under accusations of arson. The arrest took place at the Howard Forest fire station located in Mendocino County on September 20, 2024, drawing significant attention due to the suspect’s position within California’s firefighting community.

Hernandez is alleged to have started five separate fires within the North Bay area during the summer months, all occurring when he was off duty. These specific incidents include the Alexander Fire on August 15, the Windsor River Road Fire on September 8, and the Geysers Fire on September 12, with two fires occurring on September 14—the Geyser and Kinley Fires. Remarkably, all five blazes combined caused minimal destruction, burning less than one acre of land. This was largely attributable to the swift actions of neighboring residents and local firefighters, who successfully extinguished the flames before they could spread.

Cal Fire has always been at the forefront of wildfire response, with over 12,000 dedicated personnel working tirelessly to protect California's natural landscapes and communities. Therefore, the notion of one of these individuals allegedly betraying public trust struck hard. Joe Tyler, Cal Fire’s Director and Fire Chief, expressed his dismay, stating, "I am appalled to learn one of our employees would violate the public’s trust and attempt to tarnish the tireless work of the 12,000 women and men of Cal Fire." His remarks underline the shock and disbelief among fellow firefighters who devote their lives to battling the very threats Hernandez is accused of igniting.

Sonoma County Division Chief Fire Marshal Cyndi Foreman echoed this sentiment by expressing how disheartening the news has been for those within the fire service. "The press release is hard to swallow," she stated, illustrating the emotional toll this situation has taken on the local firefighting community.

Hernandez is now facing charges of arson to forest land and will be booked at the Sonoma County Jail. The incident raised questions about public vigilance against suspicious activity related to wildfires. Cal Fire urges Californians to report any unusual behavior during fire incidents, emphasizing the importance of community awareness. Those who may have witnessed suspicious actions near fire scenes are encouraged to provide detailed descriptions to assist law enforcement investigations.

The arrest adds to the unsettling statistics surrounding fire-related crimes, with Cal Fire's law enforcement officers having arrested 91 suspected arsonists just this year alone, as recorded on September 1. This figure points to the broader issue of fire safety and the magnitude of threats posed by arson.

The community response to the arrest remains one of shock and confusion, particularly among victims of past wildfires. Diana Elsbree, a Windsor resident who narrowly escaped losing her home during the devastating Kincade Fire of 2019, expressed her disbelief at the situation. "It’s pretty sad," she remarked, reflecting on the countless lives and properties affected by wildfires. Elsbree had noted the emotional scars left by such disasters, which she continues to grapple with every fire season.

Hernandez is currently being held on bail set at $2 million, and the fallout from these events will undoubtedly have ramifications, not just legally but also within the community and Cal Fire itself. The public’s trust is pivotal for agencies like Cal Fire, which rely heavily on community partnerships for effective wildfire management and emergency response.

Looking forward, it is clear the consequences of these actions extend far beyond the individual, permeated through the fabric of local wildfire preparedness and prevention strategies. The focus now shifts to repairing the breach of trust and ensuring such violations do not occur again.

Cal Fire has emphasized the community's role in combating arson and improving public safety measures. By disseminated resources and encouraging citizens to remain alert, they hope to mitigate risks associated with deliberate acts of arson. Resources like the Cal Fire Arson Hotline (1-800-468-4408) remain available for those who wish to report suspicious activities. Cal Fire aims to engage the public through awareness programs, focusing on the importance of community involvement to help safeguard California’s natural beauty.

The ramifications of this incident may well resonate for years to come, reinforcing the need for watchfulness and proactive community action against the dangers of wildfires. With personal stakes high for many Californians, the actions and motivations behind such fires will likely continue to spark debate and analysis.
