ByWard Market Launches Synthetic Sk Skating Rink For Winter Fun

New artificial surface ensures skating remains possible amid warmer temperatures

Winter is coming, and with it brings the familiar anticipation of ice skating, hot cocoa, and the festive spirit. But let's face it, as temperatures continue to fluctuate and climate change impacts weather patterns, traditional outdoor skating rinks often find themselves compromised. Thankfully, Ottawa's ByWard Market has rolled out something fresh and innovative to tackle this issue—a synthetic skating rink.

The new rink, located on William Street, officially opens its doors to the public this Friday. Unlike conventional rinks, which rely on cold weather and ice maintenance, this one boasts a synthetic surface. "We still are very much a winter city, but we might not be getting the temperatures for the real ice," said Zachary Dayler, who serves as the executive director of the ByWard Market District Authority. This sentiment resonates with many outdoor enthusiasts who might feel the pinch as we face warmer winters.

The synthetic surface, made from high-density polyethylene, allows for skating regardless of the weather. Melanie Anderson, the authority's general manager, points out the advantages of this material. "It's like a sure bet versus a frozen rink," she said. Consider this: last winter, Ottawa’s iconic Rideau Canal Skateway opened for only ten days, barely giving skaters a chance to lace up their skates. This year, the synthetic rink is poised to provide a reliable spot to hit the ice, come rain, shine, or whatever else Mother Nature decides to throw our way.

Operating this new facility is also likelier to be easier on the budget. With no refrigeration or resurfacing needed, the rink is expected to be cheaper to manage than traditional setups. "A big part of it is making something affordable, so we can offer it for free and grow over the next couple of years," Anderson explained. Admission will be free, making it accessible to all.

It's not about breaking world records here, though. The William Street rink, which is not Olympic-size, will accommodate 20 to 30 skaters at any one time. Still, Dayler sees this as part of learning how to leverage the new surface effectively. "We have to think about ways to continue to add to the vibrancy and revitalization in the face of all the challenges we’re experiencing, whether political or climatic," he noted, highlighting the need for creative solutions.

While this rink will serve as a venue for skating, its broader aim is to invigorate the ByWard Market area and attract more visitors. With local businesses benefiting from increased foot traffic, tourism experts like Jérôme Miousse stress the importance of diversifying winter activities. The idea is simple—fewer dependencies on favorable weather conditions lead to happier residents and, inevitably, more good vibes around town. "It’s great for the quality of life for residents," Miousse added, bringing yet another layer of community focus.

The timing for the rink's grand opening could not be more perfect as it coincides with the winter market and tree-lighting event slated to start at 4 p.m. on Friday. The atmosphere promises to be festive, with locals gathering to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season.

There's also the added benefit of skating rental services, allowing anyone who doesn't own skates to take part. The synthetic surface opens up opportunities for schooling sessions for beginners, making this rink not just about fun but also learning. The hope is to see families come out and enjoy the space, fostering community spirit.

So, if you're wondering where to enjoy the winter chill without worrying about conditions going south, look no farther than the ByWard Market's new synthetic rink. With its reliable surface, free admission, and festive atmosphere, it seems poised to become the go-to locale for skating enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

While traditional ice rinks may still hold nostalgic appeal, the future seems bright for synthetic solutions like the one demonstrated at ByWard Market. It’s not just about getting out on the ice; it’s about making winter fun accessible to everyone, no matter what the weather may throw at us. So bundle up and get ready to glide, spin, and twirl your way through this winter wonderland—rain or shine!
