BYD’s Fast-Charging Technology Sends Shares Soaring

The new ‘super e-platform’ enables 400 kilometers on just five minutes of charge, twice as fast as Tesla.

Shares of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD surged to record highs this week following the announcement of its groundbreaking fast-charging technology. On March 17, 2025, BYD revealed its new fast charging platform, which allows its vehicles to travel as far as 400 kilometers after just five minutes of charging. This impressive capability is touted to be twice as fast as Tesla's current charging technology.

At a live-streamed event from the company's Shenzhen headquarters, BYD founder Wang Chuanfu discussed the new 'super e-platform,' which will initially be available on two new electric vehicles: the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV, priced from 270,000 yuan (approximately $37,328.91). Wang noted, "This is the first time in the industry the unit of megawatt (charge) has been achieved on charging power," underscoring the significance of the innovation.

This announcement led to BYD's stock reaching an all-time high of 384.57 yuan per share. The company’s shares have seen remarkable growth, rallying nearly 42% year-to-date. Meanwhile, Tesla, its biggest competitor, faced significant losses, with shares plunging nearly 10% over the same week, including more than 5.8% on March 18, 2025. Tesla's superchargers currently offer up to 500 kW of charging speeds, far below BYD’s new capabilities.

The fast-charging technology is pivotal as it directly addresses common concerns among potential electric vehicle owners about the practicality of EVs during long-distance travel. Many drivers have voiced worries about battery life and charging times, which could deter them from considering electric options. Wang emphasized the importance of this new development, stating, "We have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refueling time of petrol vehicles." This initiative aims to significantly reduce what he referred to as 'charging anxiety' among consumers.

To complement the new fast-charging technology, BYD also announced plans to construct over 4,000 ultra-fast charging facilities across China. This ambitious network aims to ease the reliance on third-party charging stations, which many BYD owners have depended upon until now. Currently, BYD accounts for over one-third of EV sales within China, but has largely relied on public charging poles and facilities from other manufacturers.

BYD did not provide specific timelines or financial details concerning the investment for this extensive charging infrastructure, but it will undoubtedly pose a new challenge for Tesla, which has operated its Supercharger network within China since 2014. Tesla has built over 2,000 stations containing approximately 11,500 Superchargers across the nation as of September 2024.

The recently unveiled charging system isn't just about speed; it reflects the competitive nature of the EV market, where rapid advancements help drive larger adoption rates. Other players, including BYD's smaller competitors like Nio, Li Auto, Xpeng, and Zeekr, have also invested heavily and built substantial charging networks over the years, with Nio holding the record for the most expansive network, featuring nearly 2,700 fast charging stations.

BYD's efforts do not stop with the charging platform. Last year, the company upgraded its plug-in hybrid technology, allowing hybrids to achieve driving ranges of up to 2,100 kilometers on a fully charged battery combined with fuel. This comprehensive approach reflects Wang Chuanfu's vision to place BYD at the forefront of electric mobility.

With this new technology and the planned infrastructure, BYD is firmly positioning itself as the global leader in the electric vehicle market, overtaking Tesla, which has held the flagship status for years. The introduction of such advancements heralds significant shifts within the industry, pushing competitors to innovate or risk being left behind.

Wang’s enthusiastic remarks about addressing the genuine need for accessible charging solutions resonate deeply within today’s electric vehicle discourse. The commitment to speeding up charging timelines mirrors broader societal shifts toward renewable energy and sustainable transportation, inviting consumers to rethink how they approach vehicle ownership. BYD is not only adapting to but actively shaping the future of automotive technology, reinforcing the importance of speedy charging as part of the EV experience.
