The community spirit resounds vibrantly throughout Burnham-on-Sea, with multiple initiatives showcasing the kindness and commitment of local residents. From charity events to educational performances and acts of generosity, these activities paint a heartwarming picture of communal support.
On December 21, the Burnham-on-Sea RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) received substantial backing through a charity event organized by Mayor Sharon Perry. With the aim of helping the local lifeboat station, the event at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre raised £660, much to the delight of the Mayor. "I am delighted... for such a fantastic local cause," Perry expressed, underscoring her commitment to supporting local organizations. Lifeboat Operations Manager Matt Davies remarked, "This is a well-received donation, which will help us continue saving lives at sea," highlighting the importance of community contributions to maintaining the RNLI’s life-saving services.
Meanwhile, another shining moment of community achievement emerged with the recognition of the Burnham-On-Sea & Berrow Golf Club greenkeepers. They have been selected as finalists for the esteemed ‘Greenkeeping Performance of the Year Award’ at the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) Awards, set to be held on January 21 at the Harrogate Convention Centre. This nomination emphasizes the professionalism and dedication of the greenkeeping staff, contributing significantly to the quality and reputation of the local golf course.
Further epitomizing community solidarity, resident volunteers organized a free Christmas lunch for nearly 50 individuals who might have otherwise faced the holiday alone. The event, spearheaded by local champions Chantelle and Adam Sear, alongside Nichola and John Doble, provided not only meals of turkey and trimmings but also companionship and entertainment at the village’s Balliol Hall. "We wanted to do something special to help local people who would have been alone this Christmas – and it went so well," Chantelle noted, as guests expressed their gratitude for the initiative. Many attendees shared how the warm and welcoming atmosphere made it feel like Christmas truly had arrived, emphasizing the joy and thankfulness felt throughout the gathering.
Schools also played their part, with pupils at Burnham-On-Sea’s St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School & Nursery delighting audiences with their performance of ‘The Magical Christmas Jigsaw’. The show, which captivated families and friends, follows the Christmas narrative as elements are pieced together. Fr Paul praised the pupils, stating, "The children told the special Christmas story which ... with all the traditional nativity characters." The performance not only entertained but educated, offering everyone involved the gift of festive cheer.
Another remarkable highlight was the outstanding achievement of local resident Paula Protheroe, who was recently honored with a volunteering award for her exceptional efforts to combat loneliness among older residents. Since joining the charity Re-engage, Paula has established four social meeting groups, organizing monthly tea parties where older folks can gather, connect, and share experiences. “There is a lot of call for groups to help older people... they are so much fun and bring great enjoyment to the guests,” Paula mentioned, noting her ambition to open even more groups.
Paula’s dedication caught the eye of the Marsh Charitable Trust, awarding her £250 for her hard work and commitment to the community. Jenny Willott, CEO of Re-engage, praised Paula, stating, "To be singled-out as Paula has been shows she really is extraordinary," recognizing the invaluable role volunteers play in uplifting the community.
These events and initiatives collectively paint Burnham-on-Sea as a community brimming with kindness, support, and active participation. Each story, from the life-saving efforts of the RNLI to the heartfelt Christmas lunch and remarkable volunteer feats, exemplifies how residents rally together, ensuring no one faces challenges alone and fostering an environment of togetherness. The spirit of community is truly alive and well, and it is these moments of compassion and dedication where the heart of Burnham-on-Sea shines brightest.
