Burglar Awarded Millions After Prison Stabbing

Steven Wilson receives over £5 million following life-altering injuries from jail attack

A burglar who sustained severe injuries after being stabbed multiple times by another inmate has been awarded more than £5 million by the High Court. The incident unfolded during Mr. Steven Wilson's kitchen duties at HMP Chelmsford, Essex, back in July 2018, highlighting troubling issues around prison safety and management.

Mr. Wilson, now 36, was attacked with a nine-inch knife by fellow inmate serving life for murder. During the court proceedings, it was revealed the risk assessment conducted failed to conclusively determine his attacker’s trustworthiness to be left unsupervised, yet he was still allowed access to knives.

Wilson’s injuries were devastating, including lacerations to his liver and stomach, alongside penetrating wounds to his abdomen and chest wall, and even suffering from an incomplete spinal lesion, forcing him to rely on mobility aids, including a wheelchair and walking frame.

During the trial, Judge Melissa Clarke noted, “There is no doubt Mr. Wilson's life has been radically and permanently affected by the physical and psychiatric injuries” from the attack, stating he would require assistance for the foreseeable future.

The details of the case paint severe shortcomings of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) concerning the deployment of high-risk prisoners. Mr. Wilson, who was on remand for aggravated burglary, emphasized how vulnerable he felt following the incident, haunted by fears of being attacked again and unable to defend himself due to his physical limitations.

His tragic ordeal began when he was assigned kitchen duties, which necessitated regular contact with sharp objects, unbeknownst to the serious risks posed by his fellow inmate. The judge pointed out the glaring inconsistency: even though prison authorities were aware of potential threats, they still placed Mr. Wilson in harm's way.

Although the MoJ quickly admitted liability for the stabbing, they contested the claim amount, paving the way for extensive evaluations of Mr. Wilson’s condition and the care he would need moving forward.

This sits within broader concerns about prison safety and the correct handling of dangerous criminals. The reported risks of overcrowding, understaffing, and inadequate assessments of violent offenders certainly raise considerable red flags for the justice system. Many experts suggest these systemic flaws could lead to more incidents like this, jeopardizing the safety of inmates and staff alike.

During the proceedings, Judge Clarke awarded Mr. Wilson £5,404,559, breaking down significant portions of this amount to support his future care needs, which she expects will require continuous assistance due to the severe impact of his injuries.

The prison system often grapples with criticisms and lacks the resources to manage effectively. Issues like these reveal not just the failures of individual institutions but raise urgent questions about overall policy effectiveness within the UK’s penal system.

After serving part of his sentence, Wilson was released from prison due to his injuries, now facing challenges of daily living as he strives to adjust to life outside. His story serves as both a reminder of the violence within prison walls and the responsibility of authorities to safeguard inmates, regardless of their past actions.

Wilson’s case unequivocally brings to light the discrepancies between the safety measures intended to protect inmates and the reality of prison life, marked by violence and unpredictability. With rising awareness of these issues, it remains to be seen what measures, if any, will be implemented to prevent such incidents from happening again.
