Bumzu Makes History By Sweeping All Categories At KOMCA Awards

The talented artist claims the grand prize across lyric writing, composition, and arrangement, setting new industry standards.

Bumzu has made history at the 11th KOMCA Copyright Awards, sweeping all categories for popular music. On February 25, 2024, the Korean Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) announced Bumzu's incredible achievement, marking him as the first artist to win the grand prize across all major categories: lyric writing, composition, and arrangement. This substantial win not only highlights Bumzu's artistic talent but also his influential role within the contemporary K-pop scene.

Widely recognized as a member of the successful group Seventeen, Bumzu emerged as the top copyright earner for 2024, solidifying his position as a prominent figure within the music industry. His remarkable sweep at the KOMCA Awards is seen as groundbreaking, reflecting his extensive contributions to music production and song arrangement over the past year.

The KOMCA Copyright Awards serves as the only copyright-based music award ceremony in South Korea, honoring artists who have generated the highest royalties within the past year. Bumzu's achievement is particularly significant, as he previously won the top awards for both lyric writing and composition the year before, making this year’s expansion to include arrangement particularly extraordinary.

“I sincerely thank everyone who loves K-pop. I also have great respect for all my fellow artists, both seniors and juniors, who continue to create music,” Bumzu stated during his acceptance speech, expressing gratitude to the community of artists and fans who have supported him throughout his career.

Meanwhile, the KOMCA Awards also recognized other exceptional talents. Lee Sang Hee claimed the award for children’s music, winning the prestigious prize for the fifth consecutive year. His work is highly regarded for its ability to combine emotional depth with educational elements, making it invaluable to the development of children’s music.

For classical music, renowned pianist and composer Yiruma received the grand prize for the fourth year running, continuing to enchant both local and international audiences with his lyrical melodies and distinctive artistic style. His achievements are indicative of the growing global appreciation for classical music within the K-pop and broader music industry.

Recognized for his impact on the Korean music scene, Lim Young Woong received the 'Song of the Year' award for his hit track “Do or Die,” which generated the highest copyright royalties from streaming last year. Lim, who wrote the lyrics along with songwriter Cha Ri (Cha Ah Rin), expressed immense pride and honor at receiving this significant recognition.

Additions to the ceremony included the induction of legendary folk musician Song Chang Sik to the KOMCA Hall of Fame, celebrating his enduring influence and remarkable contributions to Korean folk music since the late 1960s. His songwriting, characterized by poetic lyrics and sophisticated melodies, has left timeless classics such as “Hunting Whales” and “Why Call” as part of Korea’s cultural heritage.

The KOMCA also awarded contributions to non-popular music, with artists such as Lee Young Jo (pure music), Jeon Pyeong (traditional music), Kim Jong Kwang (children’s music), and Park Min Woo (religious music) being honored for their dedication to enhancing cultural music genres.

Beyond individual artist acknowledgments, significant recognition was also afforded to those supporting the production and presentation of music. Audio engineer Choi Nam Jin was awarded for enhancing sound quality, and manager Lee Sang Ki was honored for his extensive work supporting artists’ careers.

Broadcast accolades went to Park Seung Hwa from CBS's 'Kayo' and Kim Hye Young of MBC's 'Singbong Show' for their impactful programs, reinforcing the importance of live broadcasts to the music industry.

Renowned guitarist Ham Chun Ho also received recognition for his live performance, showcasing the breadth of talent recognized at these prestigious awards. This year, KOMCA has projected substantial budgets for copyright collection and distribution, setting ambitious goals at 450.9 billion KRW (approximately 314.5 million USD) and 426.3 billion KRW (about 297.4 million USD) respectively for 2025.

The KOMCA Awards not only celebrate the achievements within the music industry but also reflect the dynamic growth and diversification of Korean music, fostering broader cultural exchange and recognition within the global music community. Bumzu’s unprecedented achievements at this event are sure to inspire both new and seasoned artists, showcasing the vibrant and thriving nature of K-pop today.
