Over 3,200 students benefit from the initiative aimed at improving nutrition and health among schoolchildren.

On February 25, 2025, the city of Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, officially launched its Free Nutritious Meals Program, known as Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG). Over 3,200 students received nutritious meals as part of this initiative aimed at addressing student nutrition and health.

The launch event, centered at SMP 2 Bukittinggi, was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Mayor Ibnu Ais. The program, which had been delayed since January, features nutritious meals provided to students enrolled across various educational institutions.

Under the MBG initiative, students enjoyed meals comprising rice, vegetables, chicken, and fruit. Specifically, six schools, four middle schools, and two elementary schools, participated initially, targeting 3,233 students to benefit from this program.

During the launching ceremony, Deputy Mayor Ibnu Ais remarked, “The nutritious meals program has commenced successfully and is aimed at enhancing student nutrition.” His comments encapsulated the driving force behind the initiative, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving student health.

The MBG program's meals are prepared following strict nutritional guidelines, ensuring they are both healthy and appealing for the students. Reports indicate high levels of interest and excitement from the student body, reflected in their eagerness to partake.

The distribution process involved collaboration between local government officials, the National Armed Forces (TNI), and the police, ensuring smooth logistics to get the meals prepared and delivered on time. Local government speakers noted the efforts put forth to make this program effective, stating, “We have targeted 3,233 students for this initiative.” They also expressed commitment to maintaining food safety and quality throughout the meal distribution process.

The MBG program not only addresses immediate dietary needs but also aims to set the groundwork for future nutritional initiatives within the educational sector. Officials emphasized tracking the program's impacts on student performance and health, highlighting the importance of community involvement and support.

The initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with students and parents expressing gratitude for these nutritious meal offerings. Parents have shared their relief knowing their children are receiving well-balanced meals during school hours, which is particularly beneficial to those facing economic hardships.

Looking forward, the program aims to expand its reach, including more schools and potentially adopting additional meal options. Local government representatives reaffirmed support for introducing MBG at more educational institutions, stressing the necessity of good nutrition as foundational to student success.

Through initiatives like the MBG, Bukittinggi is paving the way for smarter, healthier students, positively impacting the community and fostering long-term benefits. The successful launch marks the beginning of what many hope will be extensive improvements to student health and welfare, one nutritious meal at a time.
