Bryan Robson Questions Rashford's Commitment To Manchester United

Rashford's resurgence at Aston Villa prompts criticism from United legend.

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has openly questioned Marcus Rashford’s commitment to the club, even as the player experiences a resurgence at Aston Villa. Rashford made the switch from United to Villa during the January transfer window after falling out of favor with the United head coach, Ruben Amorim. His last appearance for the Red Devils was on December 12, 2024, when he took to the field in a Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen.

Reports suggest that Amorim consistently omitted Rashford from matchday squads, attributing the decision to the forward’s lackluster performances in training. However, speculation persisted that there was more beneath the surface. A contentious exchange between Rashford and Amorim reportedly occurred after the manager accused the player of going out on a night off—a claim that Rashford challenged, demanding evidence.

Since his loan move to Villa, Rashford has looked revitalized, recording four assists in nine appearances, and has even earned a recall to the England national team under coach Thomas Tuchel, making his presence known in a 2-0 victory against Albania.

Robson recognized Rashford’s improved form but also took the opportunity to challenge the player’s motivations behind the transfer. "Hold on a minute,” Robson stated, questioning why Rashford couldn’t enjoy his football at such an esteemed club as Manchester United. “If I’m at Man United, I’m enjoying my football, or I should be enjoying my football, and I’m going to work hard to try and make the team successful,” he emphasized.

Robson’s critique comes amid a broader dialogue about Rashford's potential and future at United, particularly given the historical tendency for players to thrive after departing Old Trafford. Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney, both United legends, have been vocal regarding their concerns about Rashford, with Scholes calling for Amorim to remove him from the team and Rooney suggesting that a transfer was necessary for Rashford’s career revival.

Despite the criticism, Robson remains hopeful about Rashford’s eventual return to Manchester United, believing the player possesses extraordinary talent. "Marcus has unbelievable talent and should be doing better for Manchester United. He shouldn’t even be moving on to Aston Villa. He should be giving his best for Man United,” Robson remarked.

The ongoing situation raises questions about the future for Rashford and the decisions that lie ahead, especially as United prepares for their upcoming match against Nottingham Forest on April 1, 2025. Robson expressed confidence in Rashford’s capabilities, stating, "(Returning) is the manager’s and Marcus’s decision. But for me, he’s got the talent, and you’ve got to get the best out of him. And Marcus has got to get the best out of himself, and he should be a Man United player next year.”
