BrucePac Expands Meat Recall Amid Listeria Scare

Nearly 12 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat products recalled due to contamination risk

Meat producer BrucePac has expanded its recall of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products to nearly 12 million pounds due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This extensive recall affects various products sold at major retailers such as Trader Joe's, Kroger, Walmart, and Target, among others. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued this warning after routine testing detected the dangerous bacteria, which is often fatal and can lead to serious illness, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The troubling situation began on October 9, 2024, when BrucePac initiated the recall of approximately 10 million pounds of food items. Since then, the number has grown significantly as the company and the USDA worked to identify additional affected products. The current tally indicates about 11.8 million pounds have been recalled, incorporating ready-to-eat meals, salads, sandwiches, and other items primarily produced between June 19 and October 8 of this year.

Among the 342 pages of products recalled, some meals contain chicken, and others incorporate various meats, including bacon and ham. The most common affected items are premade salads, burritos, and wraps, many of which have been distributed to schools, grocery stores, and food service establishments nationwide. Notably, Amazon, Aldi, and various regional chains are also on the list, indicating the extensive reach of this recall.

While officials have not received confirmed reports of illnesses linked to the recalled products, the potential for serious health risks remains high. Listeriosis primarily affects young children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms might not appear until several weeks after consumption, making it challenging to link the infection to the source food. Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues, which can escalate to severe complications and even death.

With Listeria posing severe health risks, the USDA has urged consumers to dispose of or return any affected products for refunds. Retailers receiving recalled goods are similarly advised to remove them from shelves immediately to mitigate any risks. BrucePac has emphasized their commitment to consumer safety and has stated they are collaborating with the USDA to manage the situation appropriately.

The CDC estimates around 1,600 people are infected annually with listeriosis, with approximately 260 fatalities linked to such infections. The vigilance on the part of both the producer and regulatory bodies reflects the gravity of food safety, especially as the U.S. contends with numerous foodborne illness outbreaks each year. Recently, Boar's Head was embroiled in controversy over listeria-related deli meat recalls, which tragically resulted in nine deaths among affected individuals.

For now, BrucePac has suspended production until they can assure the safety of their food supply. Consumers are encouraged to check their refrigerators and freezers for any potentially harmful items. BrucePac hopes to resolve this crisis swiftly so they can restore public trust and recommence operations. Public Health departments remind everyone to stay informed about food safety recalls and to take necessary precautions when consuming pre-prepared meals.
