Broncos Coach Michael Wilhoite Arrested For Assaulting Officer

The outside linebackers coach is accused of punching a police officer at Denver International Airport during a routine incident.

Denver Broncos outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested on Sunday afternoon at Denver International Airport, facing felony charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer during what should have been a routine encounter. The incident occurred when Wilhoite, 38, parked his vehicle unattended at the airport's arrivals drop-off lane, leading to confrontation with law enforcement.

According to the police affidavit, Officer Scott had approached Wilhoite after observing the unattended vehicle. Upon Wilhoite's return, the officer informed him he could not leave his vehicle there. Wilhoite reportedly responded with two profanities, instructing the officer to "shut the f*** up," and then confronted him physically by bumping his chest against the officer. This escalation led the officer to push Wilhoite back, prompting him to strike the officer in the face.

"These are routine, everyday interactions...that thousands of people get through successfully at the airport without assaulting a police officer," said Magistrate Arnie Beckman during Wilhoite's Monday court appearance, as reported by the Denver Post. The judge set bail at $5,000.

After the punch, as Wilhoite attempted to retreat to his vehicle, the officer used his Taser, hitting Wilhoite on his left side. Reports indicate the taser had little effect, allowing Wilhoite to flee the scene by driving away. Visible injuries were sustained by the officer, including knee pain and jaw injury.

Following the incident, the Denver Broncos released a statement acknowledging the situation: "We are aware of a situation involving Michael Wilhoite and are currently gathering more information." Wilhoite's attorney has not yet provided any public comments.

Wilhoite joined the Broncos coaching staff in 2023, bringing with him significant experience as both a player and coach. Before joining the Broncos, he worked closely with head coach Sean Payton at the New Orleans Saints, first as a special teams assistant, then as a defensive assistant. He also spent the previous two seasons coaching linebackers for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Throughout his six-season NFL career, Wilhoite played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks. He has the distinction of contributing to the 49ers' Super Bowl 47 run after initially starting on their practice squad. His transition to coaching showcased his commitment to the sport and development of new players.

This arrest marks a significant incident for both the Broncos and Wilhoite's career, raising questions about behavior management and public safety, especially for those entrusted with coaching and mentoring young athletes.

The Broncos had previously made headlines following their franchise record for sacks last season, showcasing the team's competitive spirit and potential heading forward, now clouded by this troubling incident involving one of their own.

Wilhoite's legal process is just beginning as he prepares for the next steps following his release on bond. With the team's season approaching, the Broncos organization faces the burden of managing the fallout from this incident even as they focus on their on-field performance.
