Michael Wilhoite, the outside linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos, was arrested on February 22 at Denver International Airport, facing serious allegations of second-degree assault against a police officer.
The incident occurred when Wilhoite, 38, left his vehicle unattended at the airport's drop-off area. According to reports from 9 News and the Denver Police Department, the confrontation began around 2 p.m. when Wilhoite returned to his vehicle and was approached by a police officer who informed him he could not leave the car unattended.
Rather than complying with the officer's request, Wilhoite reportedly responded with hostility, telling the officer to "shut the (expletive) up". The situation escalated rapidly as Wilhoite allegedly bumped his chest against the officer before punching him, causing the officer to fall to the ground.
The officer, who was working on a curb assignment at the time, utilized his Taser on Wilhoite as he attempted to flee the scene. Despite being struck by the Taser, Wilhoite managed to enter his vehicle—a gray 2021 Ford Bronco—and drove away, leaving the officer with visible injuries to his knees and jaw.
Wilhoite was arrested and booked at the Denver downtown detention center shortly thereafter, where he was held on suspicion of second-degree assault. Following his arrest, he was brought to Denver County Court for his initial appearance on February 23. During this hearing, Magistrate Arnie Beckman set Wilhoite's bail at $500 and expressed concern over the violent nature of the incident, stating, "These are routine, everyday interactions... That a routine... encounter turned violent is concerning to the court."
The Broncos organization issued a statement acknowledging the incident, affirming, "We are aware of a situation involving Michael Wilhoite and are in the process of gathering more information.” The team’s quick response indicates their commitment to addressing the issue amid the serious allegations against their assistant coach.
Wilhoite joined the Broncos staff as the outside linebackers coach under head coach Sean Payton prior to the 2023 season, following stints with the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers. Before transitioning to coaching, he had a notable NFL career as a linebacker, playing primarily for the San Francisco 49ers from 2012 to 2016 and finishing with the Seattle Seahawks. Over his six-year playing career, he appeared in 79 games, starting 45, and was known for his tackling ability.
Coaches and players alike have praised Wilhoite’s football knowledge and dedication to developing young talent. His work with the Broncos defense, particularly, has been highlighted as effective, with players like Nik Bonitto earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors during his tenure.
The allegations against Wilhoite are shocking to many fans and pundits who view him as a promising figure in coaching. The Broncos, currently focused on preparing for their future games, now have to navigate this unexpected setback involving one of their key coaching staff members. The outcome of Wilhoite’s legal proceedings may significantly impact his coaching career and the Broncos' defensive strategies moving forward.
Wilhoite's initial court appearance is set for 10:30 AM on February 23. The outcome of this case will likely draw considerable attention, as it raises questions concerning conduct and professionalism within the sport, especially as the NFL grapples with off-field issues involving players and coaches.
With the team's future uncertain following this incident, the Broncos organization will need to respond not just to the legal aspects of this situation but also to maintain morale and focus among the coaching staff and players.
