Jacksonville State University wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner is making waves both on the football field and with aspirations for the wrestling ring, thanks to his illustrious family background.
During the StaffDNA Cure Bowl, Rechsteiner was focused on the game when his father, wrestling legend Scott Steiner, spoke about his son’s future, intertwining the worlds of football and professional wrestling. Scott Steiner mentioned, "That’s the plan. That’s what he wants to do. Whatever makes him happy. He’ll be a Steiner. So, I’ll help him anytime I can." Rechsteiner has established himself as one of the exciting players on the field, but it’s the sport of pro wrestling where he aims to continue his athletic career after retiring from football.
Scott, who remains one of wrestling's most recognizable figures, believes his son has what it takes to succeed when he transitions from the gridiron to the squared circle. He remarked, "But he’s a good athlete. The sky is the limit for him." While he nudges his son toward wrestling, Scott highlighted the significance of the hard work required to thrive, humorously stating, "Be a genetic freak like myself," referring to the dedication he put forth during his own 25-year wrestling career. "It takes a lot of work," he added, showing confidence in Brock's potential future.
Brock Rechsteiner, still just a junior at Jacksonville State, is not yet ready to make this leap but has his family's backing when the time arrives. Cousin Bron Breakker, the current WWE Intercontinental Champion and also from the same wrestling dynasty, shared his excitement about Brock's future prospects: "It’s exciting. It’s cool to come out here and get to watch Brock, and see him perform. I was a football player myself, once upon a time... I think physicality [translates from football to wrestling], first and foremost. It’s in the family blood. It’s a family business."
The similarities between football and wrestling extend beyond family ties. The physical conditioning, teamwork, and mental toughness developed on the football field prepare athletes for the rigors of wrestling. Breakker added, “There’s so many things... but I think football and obviously amateur wrestling are probably the top two sports... I think he’s going to take to it really well. I’m excited for him.”
With two giants of the industry, Scott and Breakker, as mentors, Brock has the best resources available to pave his way to success. The crossover appeal between the sports — with names like Roman Reigns, who was a defensive lineman at Georgia Tech before attaining stardom, leads many to believe Brock will follow suit. The Rechsteiner legacy looms large, with anticipation swirling around when Brock will make his wrestling debut, entwined with his collegiate football career.
For now, his focus remains on his performance on the field, with every game contributing to his experience and skills. Brock has demonstrated his talent by making notable plays, including impressive catches, as he did when he made a 27-yard catch during the game, wowing fans and creating expectations for his future.
