Bridging RVA Celebrates 10th Annual Community Christmas Dinner

Volunteers serve over 3,000 meals, highlighting the importance of community during the holiday season.

RICHMOND, Va. — The holiday season carries with it the spirit of generosity, and for many, this generosity translates to action. Bridging RVA, a local non-profit organization, is exemplifying this through its 10th annual community Christmas dinner, bringing the community together to share meals and provide companionship for those who need it most.

On Christmas Day, volunteers from Bridging RVA stepped up once again, dishing out over 3,000 holiday meals, highlighting the organization’s commitment to supporting those who are hungry and those seeking connection.

According to board member Ellen Thornhill, "We do it because there’s a need. There are folks in our community who are hungry, hungry for food. Some are hungry for community and fellowship.” These words resonate deeply during the holiday season, reminding us of the importance of each meal and interaction.

The menu featured traditional holiday fare, including turkey, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans, rolls, pumpkin pie, and cookies. Resources such as Congregation Beth Ahabah provided space for around 1,000 people to sit down and enjoy the meal together, fostering community spirit, leaving no one behind on Christmas.

Lee Skimin, another board member, emphasized the mission of Bridging RVA, stating, "Because nobody should go hungry on Christmas. Nobody should not have anywhere to go. Nobody should not have the chance to be with other people and share in the holiday." This sentiment of inclusion is at the heart of the organization's goals.

The event did not just stop at serving food. It also allowed families to pick out gifts for their children and grandchildren, which undoubtedly added to the holiday spirit, promoting joy and connection at what can be a challenging time for many.

People from all walks of life came together, illustrating the power of community service. Volunteer Hilary Wilkins, who has participated for several years, reflected on the importance of the event, saying, "I think it’s important for everyone to come out and support the community and support people who are less fortunate." Her words echo the sentiment of many volunteers who recognize the impact of their service.

Another volunteer, Drew Godfrey, shared his perspective about the spirit of giving back to the community, stating, "I’m here blessing people and giving them grace, and I’m also when I’m on the streets walking or driving, I see homeless people, and I hate seeing them. So it’s a blessing to be here and helping people." Personal engagement like this exemplifies the empathy the volunteers hold for those they are serving.

Bridging RVA ensures there’s something for everyone during the holidays, reinforcing the notion of caring for one another. Through this significant meal, they not only provide sustenance but create opportunities for community bonding and support during one of the year's most celebrated times.

This year's successful endeavor serves as both a continuation of tradition and as motivation for next year's efforts. If you're interested in supporting the 2025 Community Christmas Dinner, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved — whether by volunteering time, donating resources, or simply spreading the word to help meet the growing needs of the community.

Across the nation, similar community dinners and holiday giving initiatives are sprouting up, reminding us all to give back during the holiday season. These efforts reflect universal messages of love, kindness, and generosity appreciated by people of all cultures and backgrounds, making the holidays not just about receiving but actively participating in the well-being of those around us.

Bridging RVA's community Christmas dinner serves as an inspiring example of how we can each contribute to ensuring no one feels alone or hungry during this festive time. It’s about coming together — and what greater gift is there than fostering connections with those we share our community with?
