In the heart of television programming that is sweeping audiences off their couches is Paramount Plus' prequel to the much-loved series, Yellowstone. Titled 1923, the show digs deep into the past of the Dutton family, showcasing their challenges to maintain their vast Montana ranch during turbulent times that evoke the Great Depression and Prohibition.
This intriguing story is further brought to life by its team of celebrated actors including Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, alongside supporting actors like Brian Konowal, who has emerged as one of the potential breakout stars of the series. Portraying the character Clyde—a covert spy gathering intelligence on the Duttons—is no small feat and brings significant depth to the storyline. Clyde’s journey started in the original series when he first appeared applying for a lawman position to deter cattle thieves but soon revealed his ulterior motives.
In a recent conversation with Daily Mail, Konowal shared insights on his audition journey leading up to landing the role of Clyde. The actor amusingly reflected on his experiences with the franchise, recounting how he sent in an audition tape for 1883, the immediate predecessor to 1923, before eventually auditioning again for 1923. He revealed, “You know, I’ve auditioned for Yellowstone, and I auditioned for 1883, but I auditioned for a really nice part in 1883.... I hope maybe that helped down the road, because the team is the same.”
After a year-long wait, Konowal got the call about his role in 1923 while he was relaxing with his wife before a streaming session of another series. Excitedly recalling the experience, he noted, “I remember the day. I remember we were actually sitting down to watch the first episode of Severance, strangely, me and the wife, when I got the call. Then it was like, 'Oh my God, I’ve got to pack a bag and get on a plane.'”
Clyde’s character is not only layered with intrigue but was also crafted with care as Konowal expressed how the writing influences character portrayal. “For 1923, I think it was just the initial tape. We did a few tapes, give them some options, but no, I didn’t have to audition with Taylor. I know that he watches all the tapes and all that, which is a real testament to how much trust, how much he knows actors, I think,” he stated.
The pivotal moments for Clyde will occur in Season 1, as he becomes deeply enmeshed in the Dutton family’s fate. In the sixth episode, he experiences a key moment while with legends Mirren and Robert Patrick, showcasing the gravitas of the moment leading to Clyde's continued arc as a spy.
Following the creative thread, Taylor Sheridan, noted for his intricate storytelling, is behind the scenes ensuring continuity and quality. Konowal acknowledged Sheridan's influence, stating, “He was there early. I know he was there for the cowboy camp in Season 1 and came and said hello to everybody.”
As filming progressed, Konowal savored his experiences throughout Montana, a state he had never visited before. The beauty of places like Glacier National Park and communities in Missoula and Butte enriched his filming experience. “I spent time in Bozeman, Butte and Missoula... It’s just beautiful,” he shared, recalling adventures in snow and spectacular scenery that Montana has to offer.
Addressing the cold, which can be astonishingly harsh, Konowal faced it head-on during filming and rehearsal sessions. He humorously recounted a rehearsal with Timothy Dalton, where the two actors bonded over the experience of braving the frigid temperatures. “He said, 'It’s so cold!'” harkens back to the reality of working in harsh elements, yet discusses the camaraderie developed on set.
In this coming season, the stakes for Clyde rise as the audience is set to learn more about his dual life—one seeking a badge, the other spying on the ones he aims to protect. That intriguing dynamic raises the question: how well do viewers know Clyde, and are we seeing all sides of him?
1923 continues to air new episodes every Sunday on Paramount Plus, with a rich landscape of character development and plot twists shaping the Dutton family's legacy. This follow-up to Yellowstone continues to draw audiences with layers of interpersonal relationships and the consequences of choices in a time of adversity.
As for Brian Konowal, this journey into the Dutton saga promises to be a memorable one, interwoven with powerful storytelling and top-tier performances. Fans are left eagerly awaiting what comes next for Clyde, entranced by the unfolding narrative that grips the heart of the American West.
