Brewers Kick Off 2025 Season With Emotional Home Opener

Fans celebrate the return of baseball with tailgating and tributes to Bob Uecker

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers kicked off their 2025 season with a thrilling home opener on March 31, 2025, at American Family Field, facing off against the Kansas City Royals. Fans filled the parking lots early, with tailgating festivities commencing at 10:10 a.m., three hours before the 1:10 p.m. game time.

This year’s opener was particularly special, marking the first season since 1971 without the legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker, whose absence was felt throughout the stadium. Tributes included Uecker's signature across the outfield grass and a moment of silence honoring his memory.

As fans arrived, the excitement was palpable. The parking lots transformed into a vibrant scene of grilling and camaraderie. Among those tailgating was Steve Sasaki, who was serving up smash tacos made with homemade flour tortillas. “We’re grilling up some smash tacos today, so you know, just having a good time enjoying the opening game for the Brewers,” Sasaki said, embodying the spirit of the day.

For many, tailgating is as much a part of the game as the action on the field. Douglas Rupert and his family were perfecting the classics, grilling brats, burgers, and preparing various dips and salads. “You know, all the accoutrements, salads, everything, man. The dips and all that,” Rupert said, showcasing the culinary dedication of Brewers fans.

One of the most impressive tailgate setups belonged to Ryan Guhr, who brought a couch and a fire pit to enhance the comfort of his group. “Just to be comfortable and something different. Obviously, I've got the truck to haul it on, so I thought, why not?” Guhr explained. His innovative approach to tailgating was a hit, and he plans to expand his setup next year: “We’re probably going to bring two or three couches, look like the whole living room set, so it’s definitely a hit.”

The festivities were not limited to food. Live music added to the atmosphere, with DJ King James entertaining fans near the pedestrian bridge and The 5 Card Studs rocking the Miller Lite Landing from the moment gates opened until pregame ceremonies began.

As fans filtered into the stadium, they were greeted with a 2025 Milwaukee Brewers Magnet Schedule, courtesy of Palermo’s Pizza. The National Anthem was sung by Milwaukee-based singer Alison Mahal, accompanied by Valkyrie, a bald eagle from the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, at approximately 12:57 p.m.

Before the game commenced, ceremonial first pitches were thrown by Karl Simandl, representing the Wounded Warrior Project, and Dr. Kent Botsford of the ALS Association. Both organizations were supported by the late Bob Uecker, and their presence served as a heartfelt reminder of his legacy.

For the 2025 season, the Brewers introduced a new hands-free ticketing system to streamline entry into the ballpark. Fans were encouraged to download the MLB Ballpark app, which allowed them to scan their faces for entry, expediting the process significantly. This new system was available at the Home Plate West and Third Base gates, eliminating long lines and enhancing the fan experience.

On the field, Elvin Rodriguez made his debut as the starting pitcher for the Brewers, and anticipation was high among the crowd as he took the mound. The energy in the stadium was electric, with fans eager to see how the team would perform in the new season.

As the game progressed, the atmosphere remained lively, with fans cheering passionately for their team. The combination of a beautiful day, delicious food, and the thrill of baseball returning to Milwaukee created an unforgettable experience for everyone in attendance.

In the midst of the game, the camaraderie among fans was evident. One group brought over 30 friends and family members to their tailgate, exemplifying the community spirit that Brewers games inspire. “We have like over 30, probably like 35,” said Ashely Donovan, highlighting the importance of sharing the experience with loved ones.

As the day unfolded, it became clear that the Brewers home opener was not just about the game; it was a celebration of baseball culture in Milwaukee. Fans embraced the opportunity to gather, enjoy good food, and create lasting memories together.

With the new season underway, the Brewers are poised for an exciting year ahead. As fans left the stadium, they carried with them the hope and excitement that comes with a fresh start. The home opener not only marked the beginning of the baseball season but also a tribute to the enduring legacy of Bob Uecker, whose spirit will undoubtedly continue to resonate with Brewers fans for years to come.
