Breckerfeld Community Embraces Leadership Change And Events

With new leaders and exciting activities on the horizon, residents strengthen ties and celebrate together.

The Breckerfeld community is buzzing with activity as new leadership takes over key local organizations and several exciting events approach. The recent transition at the Freundeskreis Breckerfeld-Gençay marks not just the end of an era, but also the start of dynamic initiatives aimed at strengthening ties with their French partners.

After twelve years of dedicated service, Wilfried Hausmann, the long-standing president of the Freundeskreis, has stepped down. Alongside him, Herbert Roß, who has seamlessly managed the organization for the past 25 years, and treasurer Thorsten Hilker have also concluded their tenure. Their contributions to fostering the partnership between Breckerfeld and Gençay have been recognized by the community, who applauded their hard work during the recent meeting.

Taking the reins is Kirsten Roß, elected unanimously as the new chairperson. Roß expresses her commitment to continue enriching this friendship. “We thank our predecessors for their enormous commitment and look forward to leading the association with fresh energy for the future,” she stated, emphasizing her goal of solidifying and enhancing ties between the two cities through innovative projects.

The partnership, which has flourished for over 50 years since its inception by mayors Henry Bernard of Gençay and Friedrich Recker of Breckerfeld, continues to thrive. Every year, residents from both cities participate in exchanges, fostering friendship and cultural appreciation. “Each year, residents of both cities meet during Ascension weekend for exchanges,” the Freundeskreis noted, highlighting the significance of these gatherings.

Upcoming events are already on the horizon. On February 22, the Catholic community of St. Jakobus will hold its traditional carnival at the Martin-Luther-Haus, with doors opening at 6:30 PM and the program commencing at 7:11 PM. While admission is free, attendees are encouraged to contribute donations to help cover costs. Popular festivities will include dancing, games, and performances. Those wanting to participate or contribute to the program can reach out via email to [email protected].

A week prior to the carnival, another community event will take place—the much-anticipated “Singrunde.” Scheduled for February 7 at 5:30 PM, this free singing circle invites residents to join together for an hour of music ranging from folk to rock, alongside more modern hymns. Led by Wilfried Lüsebrink and Silke Berghaus, participants can enjoy live accompaniment from guitar and harmonica. "Everyone who enjoys singing together is welcome to come by,” the invitation insists, emphasizing inclusivity in the community's events.

These gatherings highlight how Breckerfeld residents not only enjoy cultural activities but also prioritize connections with their French friends. During annual visits, residents share culinary delights, showcasing local specialties; Breckerfeld sets up stands at local markets in Gençay, introducing German treats like beer, egg liqueur, and sausages. Reciprocity is key, as French friends bring regional offerings such as wine, Pineau, and cheese during their reciprocated visits.

The active engagement through events and leadership changes within Breckerfeld demonstrates the town's commitment to fostering unity and culture not just locally, but across borders. With plans for future exchanges and festivities underway, community members are eager to embrace the opportunities for connection and celebration as they look forward to 2025.
