Brazilian Networks Compete For 2027 Women's World Cup Rights

Globo, Cazé TV, and ESPN submit proposals as FIFA prepares to decide winners

The race for broadcast rights to the 2027 Women's World Cup is heating up as major Brazilian networks have submitted their proposals to FIFA, which will determine the winning bids by January. This prestigious event, set to take place in Brazil, marks the first time the country will host the women's tournament, and broadcasters are eager to capitalize on its significance.

Three prominent companies—Globo, Cazé TV, and ESPN—have made formal bids, each bringing unique strategies to the table. Globo, Brazil's leading television network, aims to broadcast matches on its open channel as well as on its sports subscription channel, SporTV. According to the Folha de São Paulo, "Globo intends to show matches on SporTV, its sports subscription channel, and on open TV.”

Meanwhile, Cazé TV, which gained popularity for its digital broadcasts during recent FIFA tournaments, also expressed interest but with modest ambitions. Their strategy is to maintain the current format, focusing on digital platforms and live presentations aimed at engaging younger audiences. Their plans follow the trend seen during the recent Women's World Cup, which indicated strong viewer interest.

The biggest surprise in this bidding war is ESPN. Having not aired any FIFA World Cup events since the men's tournament held in Brazil back in 2014, the sports channel has decided to re-enter the fray by leveraging the growing popularity of women's soccer. "The great surprise is ESPN, which hasn't shown any FIFA World Cup since 2014 when it was held here," noted journalist Gabriel Vaquer from Folha de São Paulo.

Each broadcast network draws on extensive experience and viewership data from previous women’s tournaments. For example, Globo commanded impressive viewership during the 2023 Women’s World Cup held across Australia and New Zealand, attracting over 63 million viewers. This success reflects Brazil's mounting enthusiasm for women's sports, especially after the national team secured silver at the Paris Olympics. With this backdrop, Globo is optimistic about capturing even more audience for the upcoming tournament.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will feature 32 teams, adopting the new expanded format, increasing opportunities for broadcasters to showcase diverse talents and memorable matches. Brazil is expected to provide its best stadiums for the event, enhancing the appeal to both media companies and fans alike.

According to observers, this tournament promises to invigorate discussions around women’s athletics and their representation. The high-profile broadcast will not only highlight exceptional athletes but also signify broader societal changes relating to gender equity within the sports arena.

Broadcasters are betting on sustained interest and potential growth opportunities connected to the international competition. The expected rise of women’s soccer and the possible outcomes of Brazil's performances make the forthcoming World Cup not just a sporting event but also a pivotal moment for media companies inclined to invest heavily.

With the rights bids finalized on October 10, the air of anticipation continues to build. By January, when FIFA announces its selections, the focus will be not only on which company secures the rights but also on how these media platforms plan to innovate their coverage to engage the audience meaningfully.

There’s a palpable excitement surrounding this upcoming event, reflecting the growth of women’s sports coverage and the increasing recognition of women's tournaments on global platforms. The involvement of networks like Globo, Cazé TV, and ESPN indicates the high expectations and aspirations tied to the World Cup, underscoring Brazil's commitment as the first South American nation to host it.

With all eyes on the bidding results, stakeholders from various sectors will be monitoring closely how the chosen networks will portray this international spectacle. It will shape not only viewer experiences but the broader narrative of women's football within Brazil and beyond, heralding potentially transformative changes for the sport.
