The Brazilian education system is currently witnessing significant enhancements aimed at ensuring student retention and success. One of the key initiatives, the Pé-de-Meia program, has officially launched payments for the 2024-2025 school year, benefiting thousands of young minds across the country.
On February 25, 2025, the Ministry of Education (MEC) began disbursing R$ 1,000 payments to high school students who completed their studies, with various payments scheduled for different birth months. That first batch included students born from January to June. The following day, students with birthdays from July to December received similar benefits. By February 27, students finishing their first and second years received their R$ 1,000 payments, even though access will only be granted upon their graduation from high school.
Approximately 4 million students have been impacted by this initiative, with the government providing substantial financial assistance to reduce dropout rates and encourage educational continuation. For those who successfully participated in the National High School Exam (Enem), there is the added bonus of R$ 200, provided they attended both days of the test. This added value not only fosters academic responsibility but also financially supports families striving for educational success.
Rodrigo Torres, Executive Superintendent of the Secretary of Education (SEDUC), emphasized the importance of consistent attendance. "It is very important for all students not to miss any school days... If you experience difficulties, contact your school administrator and verify your status on the system," he stated, underscoring the program's commitment to guidance and support.
The Pé-de-Meia program is framed within the broader goal of the Brazilian government to democratize access to education and reduce social inequalities among youth. Established by Law No. 14,818/2024, it operates as a savings scheme, incentivizing students to complete their high school education. Through continuous support, it embodies the desire to uplift young individuals from vulnerable socioeconomic backgrounds.
While the immediate financial aid supplements educational needs, it also serves to build futures. Eligible students can potentially receive up to R$ 9,200 throughout their academic career, covering financial incentives for attendance, completion, and exam participation. During the school year, regular students receive R$ 200 monthly payments, promoting educational engagement and achievement.
Students from the Education of Young Adults (EJA) program are also beneficiaries of monetary support, but specific amounts and conditions vary slightly. They receive R$ 225 per month contingent on consistent school attendance, supplementing the annual R$ 1,000 graduation bonus.
The payments are processed through accounts managed by Caixa Econômica Federal, which automatically create accounts for eligible students. This efficiency is intended to streamline access to benefits. For minors, parental consent is necessary for transactions, either digitally through the Caixa Tem application or at physical bank branches. Conversely, beneficiaries aged 18 and older enjoy immediate access to their funds.
Schools continue to play their part by updating the Ministry of Education with accurate data about student performance and attendance, ensuring timely payments are distributed. The local secretaries are currently tasked with submitting updated records and have up to two months to fulfill these responsibilities.
Some students, particularly those enrolled in schools with pending graduation processes or those who had prior blocked payments, may experience delays. Nevertheless, financial assistance is forthcoming as long as the required conditions are met. The deadlines for verifying information and payments remain flexible, extending through April 2025.
To remain informed, students can track their payment status via various digital platforms, including the Jornada do Estudante application and the Caixa website. Transparency and accessibility are fundamental principles underlying the Pé-de-Meia initiative.
The positive impacts derived from Pé-de-Meia are expected to ripple through the educational system well beyond the immediate financial benefits. By fostering educational persistence, the program aims to empower students, mitigate dropout rates, and provide brighter pathways to social mobility.
This initiative not only affirms the Brazilian government’s commitment to education but also serves as a progressive model for social inclusion efforts. The program was conceived to lay down the foundation for more extensive reforms addressing long-standing disparities, aiming for the collective advancement of society through education.
