Brazil And South Africa Lead Renewable Energy Expansion

Ambitious projects across continents signal growth and commitment to sustainability

Brazil is embarking on an ambitious renewable energy expansion, set to add 115 gigawatts (GW) of new power capacity by 2034. This growth is primarily driven by solar and wind energy, with projections indicating the installation of 61 GW of solar systems and 24 GW of onshore wind projects.

According to Wood Mackenzie, the market's demand is expected to more than double within the next decade, largely influenced by recent reforms aimed at liberalizing the energy sector. Law 14,300 plays a key role by establishing competitive frameworks, pushing solar utilities and distributed generation to innovate.

Marina Azevedo, Senior Power Analyst at Wood Mackenzie, noted, "Solar distributed generation remains increasingly lucrative due to high electricity tariffs." She also cautioned, though, about projected slowdowns for residential solar adopters once the market reaches full eligibility around 2028.

Hydropower will still be significant within Brazil’s energy mix, but wind and solar are expected to significantly alter the energy paradigm. The forecast suggests these sources will cover approximately 7% of Brazil's total energy generation.

Meanwhile, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is making strides to bolster renewable sectors across Europe. They’ve announced a €25.1 million loan to Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine (EPBiH) for developing the largest solar project yet on land formerly used to store coal ash.

This project alone will generate 50 megawatts from its solar panels, signifying not just investment but a shift toward sustainable practices. The initiative also includes support from UniCredit Bank, which is contributing €15 million to this green endeavor.

Significantly, this project aligns with Bosnia and Herzegovina's goal of achieving 43.6% of energy from renewable resources by 2030. The EBRD's collaboration with EPBiH extends beyond mere funding; it includes facilitating educational initiatives to prepare the workforce for the burgeoning renewable sector.

Across the globe, Green initiatives are gaining momentum as many governments and organizations awaken to the potential of renewable energy. South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, during his recent parliamentary address, highlighted the nation's commitment to transitioning toward renewable energy solutions.

He pointed to South Africa's favorable conditions for solar and wind energy as prime assets for creating jobs and spurring economic growth. The country's strategy includes bolstering its green manufacturing sectors, focusing on exports related to green technologies such as electric vehicles and renewable energy components.

Ramaphosa stated, “We must create a green manufacturing sector centered on the export of green hydrogen.” By incorporating renewable energy solutions, South Africa aims to see over 22,500 MW of generating capacity come online, representing approximately R400 billion worth of investments.

Beyond legislative and financial frameworks, technology continues to play a pivotal role in advancing renewable energy solutions. Huawei Digital Power recently unveiled its 150K series solar inverter, specially engineered for commercial and industrial applications.

This new system boasts increased efficiency and safety, providing businesses with enhanced energy management capabilities. The inverter, which is built on Huawei’s latest V6 platform, showcases the evolution of solar technology, promising reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

South East Asia also continues to make headlines with its advances in renewable energy. Indonesia has partnered with ACWA Power to develop the Saguling floating solar power plant with a capacity of 92 MWp, utilizing otherwise unproductive water bodies for energy generation.

This project symbolizes Indonesia’s commitment to tapping renewable energy resources amid growing energy demands. It highlights how floating solar power can combine efficiency with environmental conservation, showcasing the innovative solutions being implemented across the region.

These examples are part of larger regional trends where countries are inoculating their energy policies with sustainable approaches. Jordan is also making significant strides by enhancing partnerships focused on energy and development projects, reinforcing ties with organizations like the Arab Fund.

The conversation around renewable energy is ever-expanding as countries prioritize sustainability. Egypt's efforts to strengthen ties with Bahrain to discuss cooperation reflects the increasing global emphasis on green partnerships.

Another notable venture is occurring between the UAE and China, where both have agreed to augment cooperation within advanced renewable energy technologies. This industrial collaboration aims to bolster technological progress and investment, ensuring both nations remain at the forefront of the renewable energy sector.

Israel’s recent push for large-scale energy storage facilities, with proposals totaling 4,000 MW, aims to support grid reliability and storage potential as renewable sources proliferate. This effort is testimony to the importance of storage solutions as countries transition toward greener power.

An outstanding 558 new distribution substations were commissioned by DEWA during the first half of 2024, ensuring the latest renewable energy projects have adequate infrastructure. Such aggressive upgrades are fundamental to supporting the growing demand for renewable energy.

All around, these developments signify not just investments, but sweeping transformations across the energy sector aimed at fostering sustainable growth. Each step taken toward enhancing renewable energy signifies collective acknowledgment of its importance.

From international loans to significant governmental initiatives, the shift toward renewable energy appears not merely as progress but as pivotal for future energy security. The conversations being held today will shape tomorrow's energy landscapes as nations seek sustainable, reliable alternatives for generations to come.
