Braxton Jones Carted Off After Serious Ankle Injury

The Bears left tackle suffered the injury during the second quarter against the Lions, compounding the team's offensive line woes.

The Chicago Bears continue to face challenges as left tackle Braxton Jones suffered a significant ankle injury during their Week 16 matchup against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The injury occurred during the second quarter on December 17, 2023, as Jones was blocking on a pass play when he went down awkwardly after being rolled up on by defenders. His immediate reaction was concerning, as he clutched his leg with visible distress.

With 9:06 left until halftime, Jones was seen grabbing his left leg, leading the Bears' medical staff to swiftly come to his aid. They placed his leg in an air cast on the sideline, signaling the seriousness of the injury. The entire Bears sideline reportedly came out to the field, forming a circle around Jones to check on him as he received medical assistance. "His lower leg was placed in an air cast before he was carted off the field," noted Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Unfortunately, Jones was ruled out for the remainder of the game soon after the injury was assessed. This news came as even more bad news for the Bears, who were already dealing with offensive line issues throughout the season. Prior to Jones's injury, the team's left guard, Teven Jenkins, had also exited the game due to a calf injury and was later ruled doubtful for return. Jenkins was questionable to play before the game, practicing only once throughout the week.

The injury came at a time when the Bears' offense was struggling to find its rhythm, trailing the Lions 20-0 prior to Jones's injury. On the play prior to his injury, quarterback Caleb Williams managed to connect with receiver Rome Odunze for a 13-yard gain, but the celebration was muted by the consequences of Jones’s unfortunate mishap. The momentum of the game shifted, as what could have been an impactful drive turned disastrous.

With Jones out of the picture, Larry Borom shifted to left tackle and Jake Curhan filled the left guard position. The Bears' offensive line depth was already thin and now faced even greater strain from the loss of their left tackle. Rookie tackle Kiran Amegadjie, who had previously struggled when starting for Jones due to his earlier concussion, was inactive for this game, indicating the Bears' challenges with player availability.

Reflecting on the overall state of the team, one must note the uphill battle the Bears face as injuries continue to plague their offensive line. Amidst all these matters, Jones had shown promise throughout the season. The fifth-round pick from the 2022 NFL draft had been performing admirably, earning recognition for his skills and resilience. He had made the Professional Football Writers Association (PFWA) All-Rookie team, demonstrating his strong potential and upward arc within the team.

While the Bears managed to score for the first time in several weeks with Caleb Williams throwing to Cole Kmet, the epicenter of concern lay with the health and stability of Jones. His ability to contribute to the team's offense had been significant, and without him and Jenkins, the Bears quest for victory became more complicated.

With the clock winding down and pressure mounting, the Bears were slated to rethink their strategy and personnel for the rest of the season. The challenge would be not just to fill the gaps on the offensive line caused by injuries but to maintain the morale of the team moving forward. "Things just keep getting worse for the Chicago Bears," lamented sources on the sports news commentary.

The immediate effects of the injuries are palpable; the Bears' search for consistency and performance amid adversity continues. While the season remains nebulous, the next steps for the Bears will hinge on recovery and adaptation. Fans await updates on Jones's condition, hoping for the best but bracing for the long road to recovery, knowing full well the impact of losing their starting left tackle.
