BOXPARK Shoreditch Secures Lease Extension Until 2025

Community support and strong partnerships herald continued growth for London's iconic pop-up mall

BOXPARK has confirmed its flagship Shoreditch location will remain open until the end of September 2025, following strong backing from landlords Ballymore and Hammerson, as well as support from the Greater London Authority (GLA), local councils, and the community. This decision ensures the venue's continued contribution to Shoreditch's economy and cultural vibrancy.

Since opening in 2011, BOXPARK Shoreditch has played a central role in the area's regeneration, attracting over 1.25 million visitors annually. The space has provided a platform for over 250 independent businesses, contributing nearly £100 million to the economy and generating approximately 270 jobs per year. Its mix of retail, dining, and events has solidified its status as a hub for both locals and tourists.

Ben McLaughlin, COO of BOXPARK, expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, "The support we've received from the community has been nothing short of inspiring. The extension of our lease provides certainty to the 47 small, independent businesses, and hundreds of their employees across our Shoreditch site. We are absolutely thrilled to continue our presence and are committed to providing a platform for independent businesses and a vibrant space for our customers."

BOXPARK has long been recognized for its role in urban regeneration and community engagement. With its lease extension secured, the venue will continue to support independent businesses and host events celebrating its connection with the local community. McLaughlin added, "Moving forward, we look forward to making the most of our site and partners' support to continue Thriving."

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, also commented on the significance of the extension: "We are absolutely delighted." He noted, "This is significant victory for independent businesses and reinforces Shoreditch’s status as a dynamic cultural and economic hub." Kill emphasized BOXPARK's importance, stating, "Boxpark has long been a cornerstone of the area’s vibrancy, supporting hundreds of jobs and generating invaluable economic activity. This overwhelming support from landlords, local authorities, and the GLA testifies to their integral role in the community."

Interestingly, as BOXPARK Shoreditch celebrates its lease extension, the company is also gearing up for its next venture. Spring 2025 will see the launch of BOXHALL at Liverpool Street, which aims to create 150 jobs and will feature fourteen kitchens and food retail spaces. BOXHALL is currently seeking premium food and beverage brands to take part.

The Shoreditch site, historically significant as the world's first pop-up mall, was previously set to close, as landlords announced intentions to trigger a break clause. Yet, after negotiations, the venue secured its future, proving its importance once again to East London.

Boxpark Shoreditch opened at the Bishopsgate Goodsyard site nearly over 12 years ago as part of a 'meanwhile use' scheme. This initiative has always been intended as temporary. After landlords served notice on the premises earlier this year, the local community rallied for its preservation. BOXHALL is set to capitalize on its success and continue offering its unique brand of community-focused trading.

Kill expressed appreciation for the efforts of supporters: "We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who backed the Save Shoreditch Boxpark Campaign. Your unwavering support ensures this iconic venue can continue providing platforms for small businesses and lively gathering spaces for all."

With its roots deep within Shoreditch's culture and economy, and community support unwavering, BOXPARK Shoreditch stands as not only a venue but also as symbol of resilience and collaborative effort within urban regeneration efforts.

The future looks bright for both BOXPARK and the surrounding community as it continues to create value and opportunities for many. Plans to expand and innovate will only help to bolster the area's reputation as one of London’s coolest hubs.
