Boxing Faces Historic Exclusion From 2028 Olympics

Financial Issues Lead to IOC's Decision on Boxing's Future at Upcoming Games

Boxing may not be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, marking the first time the sport has faced such exclusion since its Olympic debut over a century ago. This potential absence already has fans and athletes buzzing with disappointment, as the sport holds sentimental value among Olympic traditions.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s decision stems from financial and governance conflicts with the International Boxing Association (IBA). These issues escalated to the point where the IOC stripped the IBA of its role as the governing body for boxing at upcoming Games.

The IBA's troubled relationship with the IOC was solidified when the latter withdrew its recognition of the organization entirely last year. Problems highlighted included severe financial transparency issues and governance disputes, leading to the current uncertainty surrounding Olympic boxing.

Although boxing will be absent from the upcoming Olympics, the door isn’t completely closed. IOC officials have stated there is still time for boxing to be re-included if the IBA can restructure its operations to meet the IOC's stringent governance standards.

One major factor complicates the future of boxing: the IBA's controversial decision to award prize money to its winners. The IOC has repeatedly cited this decision as part of the reason it severed ties, questioning the monetary origins and viability of such arrangements.

The IBA's lack of transparency has greatly influenced the IOC's stance, with specific doubts raised about the financial backing it receives, particularly from state-owned companies like Gazprom. Concerns about governance and financial independence have made the IBA's credibility under scrutiny.

With the 2024 Paris Olympics looming, the boxing tournament will be managed without the IBA's involvement due to these persistent issues. The IOC is implementing its own strict oversight for boxing events to prevent any governance problems from surfacing.

Despite the hurdles, there remains hope for the sport’s revival. A final decision on whether it can return to the Olympic program will be made by the IOC in 2025, leaving boxing enthusiasts with some anticipation.

The lack of boxing at the Olympics would be unprecedented, as the sport has been included since 1904. The last time it was absent was during the 1912 Games due to regulations against it established by Sweden.

The IOC has clarified what needs to happen for boxing to be reinstated: it needs to be overseen by a credible and well-governed International Federation. This means partnerships and affiliations with organizations like the IBA could prove detrimental for national boxing teams.

"For all these reasons, boxing is currently not on the sports programme of the Olympic Games LA28," the IOC stated. They also emphasized the critical nature of credible oversight to safeguard the future of the sport at the Olympics.

With boxing's historical ties to the Olympic Games running deep, this potential exclusion ignites questions about the sport’s future. Only time will tell if boxing can muster enough changes to win back its place on the Olympic stage.

Fans and athletes alike are anxiously awaiting updates on the IOC's final decision, recognizing the importance of boxing not just as sport, but as cultural heritage. The 2028 Olympics will undoubtedly be different without this long-standing discipline.

While boxing's absence would mark the end of an era, it remains to be seen if the sport can rebound from these setbacks. Enthusiasts continue to support their boxers and hope for developments conducive to boxing's reinstatement.
