A box truck crashed into a building in Boston's Chinatown on Tuesday afternoon, injuring at least six people in what authorities are calling a tragic accident. The incident occurred around 12:48 p.m. at the busy intersection of Kneeland Street and Harrison Avenue, an area known for its foot traffic and local businesses.
According to reports from the Boston Police Department, the truck, a yellow Penske rental vehicle, struck multiple poles and was wedged between a pole and the building after flipping onto its side. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, with several pedestrians injured and the driver trapped inside the cab of the truck.
“We don’t have any reason to believe that this was an intentional act,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden during a press conference. “It appears to be more of a tragic accident than anything else.”
Four people were taken to local hospitals following the crash, including one who was initially reported in critical condition. Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox confirmed that the driver was also among the injured but noted that his condition had since stabilized. Two additional individuals declined medical treatment at the scene.
The Boston Fire Department played a crucial role in rescuing the driver, using extrication tools to free him from the wreckage. Deputy Chief Steven Shaffer described the scene as “a little chaotic,” with emergency services tending to multiple victims while ensuring the area was safe.
Witnesses recounted the moments following the crash, with many rushing to help the injured. “There were two or three people laying on the ground, people helping them out, others calling the police,” said Chris Sullivan, a witness who was nearby when the accident occurred. Another bystander, Malikah El-Bey Brown, added, “It was very chaotic. I saw people hurt, I saw people injured. It’s hard to explain, but it was just very chaotic.”
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her shock at the incident, highlighting the busy nature of the area during lunchtime. “This easily could have been a far worse circumstance given the time of day and how many people tend to be in this area,” she remarked. The mayor also noted that the city’s building inspector would assess the damage to the affected structure.
As the investigation continues, authorities are looking into whether the driver experienced a medical issue that may have contributed to the crash. Commissioner Cox indicated that security footage from nearby cameras will likely play a key role in determining the sequence of events leading up to the accident.
In the aftermath of the crash, the areas of Harrison Avenue and Kneeland Street were closed off between Tyler and Washington streets as police and fire crews worked to clear the scene. Traffic delays were expected in the vicinity, with city officials warning that the area would remain restricted for an extended period.
In a statement, Penske spokesman Randolph Ryerson expressed the company's concern for those injured. “We are aware of the incident and will be cooperating fully with authorities to support their investigation,” he said. “Our thoughts are with those who have been injured in this unfortunate incident.” Penske confirmed that the truck involved was rented to a commercial trucking company.
The incident occurred just four months after a similar tragedy in which a driver inspired by the terrorist group Islamic State killed 14 people by driving a truck through crowds on Bourbon Street. However, officials have stated that there is currently no indication that this incident was anything other than an accident.
As the community comes to terms with the crash, trauma support personnel have been deployed to assist residents and local businesses affected by the incident. “It’s very painful to see that, and I feel bad for anyone and the families who have to deal with this situation,” said Patrick Zhong, owner of Tora Ramen, a restaurant located near the crash site.
The ongoing investigation will seek to clarify the exact cause of the crash and whether any legal action will be necessary. “We’re going to follow the facts and where they lead us to determine what exactly happened here,” Hayden stated, encouraging witnesses to come forward with any information they may have.
