Borealis Lights Up Liverpool's Albert Dock With Northern Lights Display

Art installation celebrates spring's arrival and fosters community connection with a stunning light show.

An art installation inspired by the Northern Lights has made its debut in Liverpool, enchanting visitors with its captivating display. Dubbed Borealis, the installation will be showcased above the iconic Albert Dock and Pier Head, starting on March 20, 2025. This art piece is a celebration of the arrival of longer, brighter days as spring approaches.

Borealis, created by renowned Swiss artist Dan Acher, utilizes technological elements and natural atmospheric conditions to replicate the mesmerizing spectacle of the Northern Lights. The installation features beams of light that dance through cloud particles, creating an awe-inspiring illusion that will change according to the weather, including variations in wind, humidity, and temperature.

This visually stunning event officially opened on the spring equinox, a symbolic time marking the transition of seasons, and will continue every evening until March 30, 2025, allowing residents and tourists alike ample opportunity to witness its beauty. Displayed against the picturesque Liverpool waterfront, Borealis at Hartley Quay aims to provide an atmospheric and immersive experience, perfect for romantic strolls or memorable family outings.

Accompanying this breathtaking light show is an enchanting soundtrack composed by French musician Guillaume Desbois, designed to complement the visual experience effectively. According to a spokeswoman from the Albert Dock, “The installation is completely unique yet consistently mesmerizing every time, inviting visitors to slow down and look up together at the incredible illusion.”

Borealis is significant not only for its artistic value but also for its role in fostering community engagement. Acher expressed a desire for the installation to create a sense of unity among spectators. “I wanted to create a situation where we come together. A place where no matter our differences and separations, no matter our political beliefs, gender or social status, we can all connect. When I created this, there was a sense of awe when people saw it. It's about bringing everyone together,” he emphasized.

The installation has a rich history. Borealis first launched six years ago in Switzerland at a technical university and has since traveled to over 40 cities worldwide, earning accolades from around the globe. Notably, it has become a permanent feature at the iconic Supertrees in Singapore's Gardens By The Bay, having captivated audiences with its stunning visual effects.

For those wishing to catch Borealis, it will be best viewed after dark, adding to the magical feel of the evening. The event will run each night from 7 PM to 10 PM, providing plenty of time for visitors to experience this remarkable piece of art.

The spectacle is entirely free—no tickets or reservations are necessary—inviting everyone to join in and immerse themselves in the experiential wonder of Borealis. As viewers gather along the waterfront and in local eateries surrounding the Dock, the dazzling display of light serves as a reminder of the changing seasons and the beauty of community spirit.

This enchanting installation not only marks an artistic milestone for Liverpool but also contributes to the city’s cultural richness. The vibrant lights reflect the city’s status as an artistic hub and exemplify its commitment to unique and engaging public art initiatives. As Borealis continues to illuminate the Royal Albert Dock until March 30, it embodies a shared moment of joy and connection for all who encounter its brilliance.
