BookMyShow COO Faces Mumbai Police Over Coldplay Ticket Controversy

The alleged manipulation of ticket sales raises serious concerns about online scalping and fairness for genuine fans

Amidst rising tensions and public outcry surrounding the ticket sales for Coldplay's highly anticipated concert early next year, BookMyShow has found itself under intense scrutiny, especially with reports of alleged black market activities. This week, Anil Makhija, the Chief Operating Officer of BookMyShow, faced the Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) concerning complaints of ticket manipulation.

The controversy erupted when ticket sales for the Coldplay concert were marred by accusations of rampant scalping and the use of automated bots to snatch up tickets. Makhija’s appearance follows two summons issued to the company’s CEO, Ashish Hemrajani, who has yet to respond to the police. The scrutiny escalated after lawyer Amit Vyas filed a formal complaint against BookMyShow, alleging the platform facilitated the resale of concert tickets at inflated prices.

Initially scheduled for January 2025, the concert has already generated unprecedented interest, reportedly with over 13 million fans logging onto BookMyShow to secure tickets. This overwhelming demand resulted in what many describe as chaos during the ticket release on September 22, leading to accusations of unfair practices.

BookMyShow has vehemently denied these allegations, with spokespersons asserting the company's commitment to ensuring fair ticket distribution. They documented the steps taken during the sale, which included limiting ticket purchases to four per user across all shows to help curb unauthorized scalping.

"With 13 million fans eager to get tickets and logged in, emotions ran high on September 22nd on BookMyShow for Coldplay’s tour in India," stated the company's spokesperson, explaining the technicalities of managing such immense demand.

The technical infrastructure of BookMyShow has also come under fire. Critics suggest the platform's systems may have inadvertently favored ticket grabs by scalpers, especially through the alleged use of bots to inflate electronic queues and dominate ticket availability. Responding to the backlash, Makhija stated, "We worked hard to offer every fan the chance to secure tickets, implementing measures to minimize disruptions."

Such measures included rolling out a queueing system, which the company touted as having functioned effectively under high demand, even if it didn’t go as smoothly as hoped initially. They acknowledged some delays but insisted the system was still aligned with providing opportunities for genuine fans.

Further making headlines, the EOW emphasized the importance of their investigation involving the claims made against BookMyShow, intent on addressing the unauthorized resale boom surrounding not just this concert but others as well. The police's probing has raised questions about how ticketing practices can be regulated effectively to protect fans.

Numerous fans have taken to social media to express their frustrations, describing their experiences during the chaotic ticket sales as disheartening and overwhelming. One disappointed user tweeted, "Ticket buying felt like a race against bots! Didn't even have one chance!"

Reacting to public sentiments, BookMyShow’s representatives have clearly distanced themselves from unauthorized third-party resale platforms, stating emphatically, "We have no association with any unauthorized resale platforms, including Viagogo and Gigsberg." They stressed their rigorous denunciation of ticket scalping practices, branding them as illegal and socially irresponsible.

With police investigations underway, BookMyShow is actively cooperating and assisting the authorities. Their assertion includes, "We have not only filed our complaint but are also proactively working with them to support the investigation fully. This is important to us as we aim to protect our users and uphold integrity within our processes."

The affair brought to light broader concerns across the entertainment ticketing industry, with many advocates and organizations calling for legislative reforms and stricter oversight aimed at curbing ticket scalping. The High Court has seen previous cases where ticket sales systems were questioned, leading to calls for transparent practices and protections for fans seeking to attend live events.

The Coldplay concert, initially positioned as one of the marquee events of the upcoming concert calendar, now serves as the center point of this debacle, highlighting the tumultuous waters ticketing platforms navigate amid overwhelming demand and modern demand dynamics. These recent controversies surrounding BookMyShow's ticketing practices not only impact their reputation but also might have long-lasting effects on consumer trust.

While the outcome of the investigation remains to be seen, the spotlight on BookMyShow could potentially lead to more significant changes within the online ticketing sector, urging companies to adapt their ticket distribution methods and take measures to avert similar pitfalls.
