Bologna And Cagliari Prepare For Festive Befana Celebrations

From parades to local artisan showcases, towns across Italy celebrate the arrival of the Befana.

The Italian Epiphany Weekend of 2025 promises to be vibrant, filled with traditions and activities celebrating the Befana, the beloved witch who brings gifts to children. From January 3 to 6, towns across Italy will engage their communities with festivities.

Starting with Bologna, families can expect events aimed at delighting children. On Friday, January 3, at 11 AM, the Befana will visit young patients at the Maggiore Hospital. This heartwarming encounter takes place on the pediatric ward and aims to brighten the spirits of the little ones.

On Sunday, January 5, the Casa dei Risvegli Luca De Nigris at the Bellaria Hospital is set to host the Befana from 11 AM, inviting guests, families, and volunteers to join the celebrations. Later, at 5 PM, the Fantateatro will present "Arriva la Befana," featuring animated readings, dances, and entertainment. A highlight of this event is the donation of proceeds to the Casa dei Risvegli, showcasing community spirit and support.

The main event will be on Monday, January 6, starting at 9 AM with "Arriva la Befana" through Piazza Maggiore and the city’s streets. A traditional procession features the Befana on her Trishow, complete with the lively Befana Band Snap Up Orchestra. Renowned chestnut seller Nicola Fusaro will once again delight attendees with his famous roasted chestnuts, cementing the culinary aspects of the day. Later, at 2:30 PM, the Gran Premio della Vittoria and Festa della Befana kicks off at the Ippodromo Arcoveggio, where children can try pony rides and engage with various games and activities.

The celebrations will conclude spectacularly at 6 PM at Teatro Duse with "Il Mago di Oz," put on by the Befana historical group. Profits from this performance will also benefit Casa dei Risvegli, reinforcing the commitment to local welfare. Children attending can expect festive treats as well, with stockings filled by the Befana herself.

Not to be outdone, Cagliari is bursting with Epiphany celebrations as well. On January 5, Palazzo Carafa will host "Arti maestre," showcasing local artisans' craftsmanship, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Meanwhile, Livorno is replete with its own festivities. At Villa Fabbricotti, from January 4 to 6, the Christmas Village will be open, featuring food stalls and entertaining shows, making it perfect for families seeking festive fun. Activities will also include ice skating and photo opportunities with Santa Claus.

On the theater front, Livorno will see performances of "La traviata" at Teatro Goldoni on January 3, followed by Francesco Cortoni’s rendition of "Pinocchio" at Nuovo Teatro delle Commedie on January 4-6. A new concert, "Happy-Fania," featuring the Orchestra of Teatro Goldoni, will wrap up the musical offerings on January 4, promising to enlighten spectators with symphonic melodies.

The festive spirit will carry on beyond local theaters as numerous food markets pop up throughout the city, offering traditional delicacies, crafts, and local products until January 6. Families will enjoy the ambiance of Christmas lights and seasonal foods, marking the end of the holiday period.

Cagliari will celebrate January 6 with various events. Notable highlights include the plunge of Epiphany swimmers and falconry exhibitions at Castello di San Michele. Activities offer both thrilling experiences and insight to the region's rich cultural heritage. Local music will resonate through the city as various performances occur, enriching the area's cultural fabric.

Finally, several smaller towns such as Pula and Iglesias will also embrace the festivities, featuring traditional celebrations of the Befana, including the distribution of sweets and the sharing of local legends about this beloved character.

Overall, the Italian Epiphany Weekend of 2025 is shaping up to be filled with joy, community gatherings, and cultural heritage, with families coming together to celebrate under the enchanting influence of Befana, the witch whose legacy endears her to both young and old.
