Bollywood Stars Discuss Film Economics And Creative Bonds

R Madhavan and Vikrant Massey reflect on work hours and fees while Fatima Sana Shaikh shares heartfelt moments from Aap Jaisa Koi sets

In the bustling world of Bollywood, the economics of filmmaking and the creative journeys behind the scenes often intertwine in fascinating ways. Recently, two prominent actors, R. Madhavan and Vikrant Massey, shared their insights on the financial and time commitments involved in film projects, shedding light on the delicate balance between passion and practicality. Simultaneously, actress Fatima Sana Shaikh offered fans a rare glimpse into the making of the Netflix film Aap Jaisa Koi, revealing the camaraderie and creative spirit that fuels such productions.

R. Madhavan, known for his versatile roles and thoughtful approach to cinema, emphasized the importance of passion over rigid schedules but recognized the necessity of respecting the project's budget and time constraints. In an interview with Firstpost, Madhavan explained, "If I am doing something that I am passionate about and I love something, then time doesn’t matter. It should be a choice. Nobody can force you to work less or more. There has to be a certain number of hours, and you should be well aware that your requirements shouldn’t be detrimental to the project and the budget of the film. That is very essential." He further advised that clarity about working hours should be established at the very beginning of a project, ensuring everyone involved is on the same page. "Making a certain number of hours of work affects creativity. It’s very personal, and there is nothing right or wrong. If anybody takes the decision to work for certain hours, should do it with the economy in place," he added.

Vikrant Massey echoed this sentiment but took it a step further by advocating for an eight-hour workday in the film industry—a practice reportedly adopted by actress Deepika Padukone after becoming a new mother. Massey expressed his aspiration to embrace similar working hours, stating, "I aspire to do something like that very soon. Maybe in a couple of years… I want to go out and say, we can collaborate, but I would only work for eight hours. But at the same time, it should be a choice. And if my producer cannot accommodate that, because there are also a lot of other things involved when you are making a film…" Recognizing the financial realities, he candidly acknowledged, "Money plays a very important role, and I will have to reduce my fees as I will be working for eight hours instead of twelve. If I cannot give my producer twelve hours a day, I cannot go out there and not reduce my fee. I ought to reduce my fee. It’s a give-and-take, right? And as a young mother, I think Deepika deserves it." This perspective highlights the evolving dynamics in Bollywood, where work-life balance is gradually gaining recognition alongside artistic dedication.

While these discussions about work hours and economics unfold, Fatima Sana Shaikh has been capturing hearts with her recent performances and candid social media posts. The actress, who recently starred in both Metro… In Dino and Aap Jaisa Koi, shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Aap Jaisa Koi on Instagram, offering fans an intimate look at the film’s creation.

In her heartfelt note, Fatima expressed deep gratitude toward the film’s director, Vivek Soni, writing, "From our daily selfies to your strange sense of humour that I still don’t fully get working with you has been a ride. You’re a walking, talking Bollywood encyclopaedia (I still don’t know how you remember every song, every scene. You are mad!) and then there is this monk-like calmness in you." She added, "Thank you for creating Madhu and trusting me with her. It’s been such a joy being part of your cinematic and magical little world." These words reveal not only a strong professional bond but also a creative synergy that enriches the filmmaking process.

Aap Jaisa Koi stars R. Madhavan as Shrirenu Tripathi and Fatima Sana Shaikh as Madhu Bose, weaving a layered family drama that unfolds across the distinct cultural landscapes of Jamshedpur and Kolkata. The film explores themes of companionship, self-discovery, and the courage to challenge entrenched gender norms. Madhavan’s character, rooted in tradition, gradually evolves as he encounters Madhu, a spirited woman who refuses to conform to societal expectations.

Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment alongside Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra, Aap Jaisa Koi premiered on Netflix on July 11, 2025. The film’s release was met with appreciation, and Fatima’s social media posts reflect her excitement and gratitude for the journey. She also penned a touching "love letter" on Instagram to both the director of Metro In Dino, Anurag Basu, and Vivek Soni, saying, "It’s not a love letter, but maybe it is. Kabhi socha nahi tha ke #MetroInDino aur #AapJaisaKoi ek saath release hongi..aur dono ko itna pyaar milega. Overwhelmed, grateful, still letting it sink in. Khud ko itne bade posters aur bade parde pe dekhna, still feels like a dream." She thanked both filmmakers for challenging, guiding, and filling her heart with love in their own unique ways.

The behind-the-scenes photos shared by Fatima capture moments of camaraderie and creative exchange with Vivek Soni, including selfies, discussions, and light-hearted interactions. These glimpses underscore the human connections that underpin cinematic art, often unseen by audiences but vital to bringing stories to life.

As Bollywood continues to evolve, voices like Madhavan’s and Massey’s bring attention to the practicalities and personal choices that shape film production, while artists like Fatima Sana Shaikh remind us of the passion and collaboration that fuel the industry’s magic. The conversations around working hours, economic fairness, and creative trust reflect a maturing industry that values both artistry and well-being.

Ultimately, the stories behind the camera, the negotiations about time and money, and the bonds forged on set enrich the films that reach audiences worldwide. Aap Jaisa Koi stands as a testament to this blend of tradition and innovation, both in its narrative and in the real-life dynamics of its creation.
