Bolivia Issues Urgent Flood Alerts For Upcoming Storms

Heavy rains may lead to dangerous river overflows across multiple regions and communities.

Bolivia is bracing for potential flooding as the National Meteorological and Hydrology Service (Senamhi) has issued two orange alerts affecting several departments, primarily La Paz, Pando, and Beni. Heavy thunderstorms and significant rainfall are expected to exacerbate river levels, raising concerns about possible overflows.

According to Senamhi, the alerts are valid until February 23, 2025, with predictions of rain accumulating between 60 and 80 millimeters. These severe weather conditions are anticipated to extend over various regions, prompting local authorities to prepare for the worst.

The risks are not only confined to urban areas; rural communities along the riverbanks are also on high alert. Notably, the rivers of Beni, La Paz, Madre de Dios, Tahuamanu, and several others could see unprecedented rises due to these heavy rains.

Marisol Portugal, a spokesperson for Senamhi, emphasized the urgency of the situation: “Se pronostica lluvias y tormentas eléctricas moderadas, temporalmente fuertes, con montos acumulados entre 60 y 80 milímetros...” This forecast indicates the seriousness of potential thunderstorms and their ability to cause widespread flooding.

Communities such as Plan Autopista, Irpavi, and surrounding areas are advised to take necessary precautions. The alert encompasses diverse provinces including Nicolás Suárez, Abuna, Federico Román, and Madre de Dios, among others. “La alerta está vigente hasta este domingo 23...” underscored the nature of the forecast.

The danger of overflowing rivers extends along the areas adjacent to the rivers Irpavi, La Paz, and Choqueyapu, which may flood neighboring communities. Precautionary measures are being recommended to residents living close to riverbanks as the weather conditions develop.

The situation is being monitored closely, as expected rainfall could also impact various tributaries and lead to spillovers affecting multiple nearby towns. The anticipated rise of waters could influence local transportation networks and disrupt daily life.

Senamhi's forecasts suggest not only immediate dangers but also long-term impacts on agriculture and local economies, primarily for regions dependent on stable weather patterns for crop cultivation.

Warnings have been propagated through media channels and community leaders to effectively disseminate information about the potential effects of this weather system. It is expected the rain will begin to intensify during early hours on February 22, heightening risks as predicted thunderstorms roll through.

The collaboration between local governments and Senamhi aims to instate measures to minimize impacts and gather support for affected communities. Emergency teams are being mobilized to assist with evacuations should flood levels rise dramatically.

Bolivia’s topography leaves it particularly vulnerable to weather extremes, and this new announcement only adds to the concerns of residents who fear for their safety and property.

Ensuring public safety is the utmost priority, and entities involved are urging residents to remain alert and follow official channels for updates as the severe weather front approaches.

The coming days will be pivotal as Bolivians brace for the impact of this weather event. With proactive measures and awareness, affected communities hope to weather the storm with resilience and preparedness.
