Bobby Portis Suspended 25 Games For Tramadol Use

The Milwaukee Bucks forward faces suspension after testing positive for banned painkiller, jeopardizing team success.

Bobby Portis Jr., forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, has been suspended for 25 games without pay after violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy due to testing positive for Tramadol, as announced by the league on Thursday. Tramadol is classified as an opioid used typically for pain relief, particularly when other pain medications aren't effective, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Portis, who played alongside the Bucks during their 2021 championship run, issued a statement claiming he took the banned substance accidentally. "I was dealing with an elbow injury and using an NBA-approved medication for pain and inflammation,” he explained. "During this time, I made an honest mistake and took a pain-reducing anti-inflammatory pill not approved by the NBA. I feel horrible and recognize I’m responsible for what I put in my body." Portis emphasized his dedication to the team, stating he will miss playing and is focused on being ready for the playoffs.

Supporting Portis, Bucks general manager Jon Horst acknowledged the situation, saying, "This is a very difficult set of circumstances for Bobby and our team. He and the Bucks organization respect the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program and will accept what’s been handed down. But we 100% support Bobby. Together we will take this opportunity to grow and will have a stronger Bucks team when he returns." Horst's comments reflect the organization’s unwavering support for the player during these challenging times.

Mark Bartelstein, Portis's agent, also defended him, explaining, "Bobby unintentionally took a pain medication called Tramadol, thinking he was taking Toradol," which is not banned by the league. Tramadol and Toradol, both used for pain relief, have somewhat similar names, which Bartelstein argues contributed to the mix-up. The agent explained, "This was, again, an honest mistake made due to the similarity in the names and the fact they both serve similar purposes. I am devastated for Bobby because he made this honest mistake, and the ramifications are incredibly significant."

With Portis's suspension starting immediately, he will be unavailable for the Bucks' upcoming games, including Thursday's competition against the Los Angeles Clippers. His next opportunity to play will be on April 8, during a home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Currently, the Bucks hold the fifth position in the Eastern Conference with a 29-24 record. Portis’s absence could impact the team’s performance, as he has been one of their more productive players this season, averaging 13.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.

Despite the setback, Portis recognized the importance of learning from this experience. "From the bottom of my heart, I want to apologize to the Bucks organization, my teammates, coaches, family, and fans. I give everything I have on the court and will terribly miss playing games for the Bucks during this time," he said. His commitment to hard work remains unwavering, and he expressed hopes for strong playoff performance upon his return.

The timing of this suspension poses additional challenges for the Bucks, who are working to integrate new players acquired during the recent trade deadline. They added Kyle Kuzma from the Washington Wizards but lost three-time All-Star Khris Middleton as part of the trade. The Bucks are currently adapting to their shifting roster amid injury concerns involving star player Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has also been recovering from his own injury issues.

Portis's suspension highlights the serious nature of compliance with league policies. The NBA's zero-tolerance stance on prohibited substances reflects their commitment to player health and integrity within the game. Portis’s situation serves as a reminder of the potential consequences athletes face when it involves medications and their classifications. The Bucks organization has indicated they will continue to stand behind Portis as he navigates this difficult period, underscoring the importance of community support during challenging times.

Moving forward, the Bucks will relies on their remaining players, emphasizing team unity and resilience as they strategize for the remainder of the season. While the loss of Portis for this stretch is significant, his acknowledgment of the mistake and acceptance of responsibility paints a picture of growth and learning for this talented player.
