BND Links COVID-19 Pandemic To Lab Accident In Wuhan

German intelligence agency cites strong evidence from 2020 supporting laboratory origin hypothesis

The Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany's foreign intelligence service, has evaluated the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, asserting with high probability, between 80% and 95%, and according to reports from the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit, it was likely triggered by a laboratory accident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This assessment was reached as early as 2020, during extensive investigations by the BND, which included the analysis of public data and intelligence obtained through operation codenamed 'Saaremaa'.

Materials collected during this operation reportedly highlighted risk-prone 'Gain-of-Function' experiments, which involve altering naturally occurring viruses to study their mutations, as well as considerable lapses in laboratory safety regulations at Chinese research facilities. These findings have re-ignited discussions about the virus's origins—whether it emerged from animal-to-human transmission within the Chinese wet market or from a catastrophic incident within the laboratory environment.

According to sources within the BND, the situation escalated to the point where the Chancellery, under former Chancellor Angela Merkel, chose to keep the intelligence findings under wraps, owing to fears over political ramifications. It was reported by various German outlets, including the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, indicating the high-level discussions involved not just intelligence officers but also specialized scientists from Berlin.

Despite their findings, skepticism within the German government has overshadowed the revelations. The insights from project 'Saaremaa' were presented to the Chancellery, yet such high-profile conclusions were withheld from the Parliamentary Control Committee of the Bundestag, responsible for supervising the intelligence services, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO). Many members of the German political scene expressed their concerns; for example, Wolfgang Kubicki from the Free Democratic Party criticized the government for leaving both the public and Parliament uninformed.

Currently, high-ranking external scientists, including Berlin's renowned virologist Christian Drosten and Lars Schade, president of the Robert Koch Institute, are examining the BND's findings under the latest government's mandate. Meeting discussions have indicated growing belief among some scientists about the lab-origin theory, even if some remain unconvinced.

Internationally, the discourse around the virus's origin is similarly complex, as seen with statements from the U.S. intelligence community. Recently appointed CIA director John Ratcliffe has adapted the agency’s previous stance, asserting the likelihood of the virus having originated from laboratory conditions rather than animal transmission.

Virologists such as Drosten have called attention to the Chinese capability to clarify the virus's natural origins, indicating they have had ample time to provide substantial evidence. Yet, he states, without concrete studies released, skepticism grows. Drosten previously held the notion of natural origin plausible, but continues to alter his viewpoint as time passes without more information. He remarked, “The longer it takes, the more skeptical I become.”

Prominent experts such as Björn Meyer of the University of Magdeburg stress the necessity for publicly available evidence to back claims made about the virus's laboratory emergence. He argues, lack of currently accessible data critically hampers valid conclusions, and according to Meyer, the existing data suggests more strongly a natural origin.

What complicates the investigation is the Chinese government's response, which has obstructed inquiries from international bodies such as the WHO. The mystery surrounding the origins of the coronavirus remains unsolved over five years after its emergence, sown amid global chaos, illness, and societal tension, leading to millions of deaths and significant economic downturns.

While scientists continue to explore the origins, the case emphasizes the stark reality of global preparedness and accountability, as the world reflects on the tumultuous impact of the pandemic. Calls for transparency and collaborative research with Chinese authorities have never been more pressing.
