Blues Force Game 7 With Dominant 5-2 Win Over Jets

St. Louis scores four goals in rapid succession to set up decisive playoff showdown

ST. LOUIS — In a thrilling showdown on Friday night, the St. Louis Blues emerged victorious over the Winnipeg Jets with a decisive 5-2 win in Game 6 of their Western Conference first-round series. This victory not only kept the Blues' playoff hopes alive but also set the stage for a high-stakes Game 7 on Sunday evening in Winnipeg.

Philip Broberg and Alexey Toropchenko each contributed significantly, recording a goal and an assist, while Nathan Walker, Brayden Schenn, and Cam Fowler also found the back of the net. Goaltender Jordan Binnington made 21 saves, showcasing his prowess as the Blues scored four consecutive goals in just over five minutes during the second period.

"It's a great opportunity," Fowler remarked about the upcoming Game 7. "We understand the challenge we're walking into in Winnipeg, but we've given ourselves a chance. That's all we can ask for."

The game started with an early goal from Broberg, who fired a one-timer from the high slot just 6:05 into the first period, giving the Blues a quick 1-0 lead. However, the Jets quickly responded, with Cole Perfetti scoring a power-play goal at 5:43 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1 after a successful challenge for offside had negated an earlier goal by Morgan Barron.

But the Blues erupted in the second period, showcasing their offensive firepower. Walker restored the lead at 11:34, converting a pass from Broberg. Just 53 seconds later, Schenn extended the lead with a wrist shot from the right circle, making it 3-1. Fowler, who has been a standout in this series, added to the tally at 13:40 with a wrist shot through traffic, marking his 10th point of the series and solidifying his status as a franchise playoff record-holder for points by a defenseman.

Toropchenko capped off the scoring spree with a wrist shot at 16:57, pushing the Blues' lead to 5-1. The Jets managed a late power-play goal from Nino Niederreiter at 8:54 of the third period, but it was too little, too late.

Winnipeg's goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, a Vezina Trophy contender this season, faced 23 shots but was pulled after allowing five goals, marking his third consecutive game not finishing in St. Louis. Eric Comrie took over in goal and stopped all four shots he faced, but the damage had already been done.

"It's two really good teams going at it," Perfetti said. "There's not a lot of room for error and when there is a mistake, both ways, teams are making plays. It's a great series. This is two really good teams going at it, and that's why it's going seven games."

The Blues' comeback was fueled by their ability to capitalize on the Jets' mistakes, and their performance in the second period was nothing short of spectacular. With the home team winning all six games in the series so far, the pressure now shifts to Winnipeg for the decisive Game 7.

"We had a loss like that in Game 4 and we went home and got the job done in Game 5," Perfetti added. "(On Saturday), the sun's going to come up and it's going to be a new day and we're going to have to focus on Game 7. It's a one-gamer. Winner moves on and we've got the home ice and we've got the fans behind us and our barn rocking."

The Jets played without their star center Mark Scheifele, who was injured in Game 5. Scheifele, who scored 39 goals and tallied 87 points during the regular season, has been a significant absence for Winnipeg, impacting their offensive strategy.

As the Blues prepare for their trip to Winnipeg, the stakes couldn't be higher. Both teams have shown resilience throughout this tightly contested series, and with everything on the line, fans can expect an electrifying atmosphere in Game 7. The puck drops at 6 p.m. on Sunday, and both teams will be looking to secure their spot in the next round of the playoffs.

With the series tied at three games apiece, the anticipation is palpable. The Blues have proven they can compete at a high level, and as they head into the decisive match, they will carry the momentum from this crucial victory. It's a do-or-die situation, and both teams are ready to leave it all on the ice.
