Blue Jackets Face Canadiens Amid Injury Concerns

Struggling teams clash as Columbus looks to bounce back before holiday break

The Columbus Blue Jackets are gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling clash against the Montreal Canadiens at Nationwide Arena. Both teams have endured tough stretches this season, with the Blue Jackets currently holding 32 points and the Canadiens trailing closely behind with 31 points. This matchup could be pivotal for both teams as they look to gain momentum as the NHL enters the holiday season.

Projected lineups show some interesting changes as the teams prepare. For Columbus, the expected forward lines include Dmitri Voronkov, Sean Monahan, and Kirill Marchenko on the top line, followed by James van Riemsdyk pairing with Adam Fantilli and Zach Aston-Reese. Other notable combinations feature Kent Johnson with Cole Sillinger and Mathieu Olivier, and finally, Mikael Pyyhtiä centering Sean Kuraly and Kevin Labanc.

On the blue line, Zach Werenski teams up with Dante Fabbro, with Denton Mateychuk and Ivan Provorov pairing as well. Both Jordan Harris and Damon Severson are also expected to be on the ice, adding depth to the defensive unit.

Notably, Jet Greaves has been called up from the American Hockey League and is set to take the starting goalie position for Columbus. This decision follows concerns over starter Elvis Merzlikins, who did not participate in the morning skate due to being “banged up,” according to head coach Dean Evason. Greaves, who has had limited playing time this season, holds a record of 0-1-2 with a 3.30 GAA and .896 save percentage over his last three appearances.

Accompanying Greaves will be various players from Columbus currently on injured reserve, including Boone Jenner (shoulder), Erik Gudbranson (upper body), Yegor Chinakhov (upper body), and Justin Danforth (lower body). Together, these injuries contribute to the Blue Jackets' total man games lost, which is now at 132, underscoring the team's struggles this season.

For their part, the Canadiens come with their own challenges, having not been immune to injuries either. Both teams are expected to be cautious, making several game-time decisions, particularly on defense. It has been reported by The Hockey News and other outlets about rookie Denton Mateychuk, the No. 12 pick from the 2022 NHL Draft, likely making his NHL debut against Montreal.

With the stakes high, the Blue Jackets are hopeful to capitalize on their home-ice advantage. Fans can tune in to the game on the FanDuel Sports Network, with Steve Mears providing the live play-by-play commentary. For radio follow, 97.1 The Fan will feature Bob McElligott giving updates and live responses throughout the matchup.

Both Columbus and Montreal are aware of the importance of this game, not just for points but also for the morale of teams and fans alike as the Christmas break approaches. A win could mean much more than just two points; it could reinvigorate the players and set the tone for the rest of the season.
