Blind Runner Hiroshi Machida Completes Tokyo Marathon

With his recent accomplishment, Machida becomes the first visually impaired Japanese runner to earn the Six Star Finisher title.

March 2, 2025, was a day to remember for 65-year-old Hiroshi Machida, a blind runner residing in Yuasa-cho, who accomplished a remarkable feat at the 2025 Tokyo Marathon. Not only did Machida complete the grueling race, but he also earned the prestigious title of "Six Star Finisher" by successfully completing all six major marathons in the world: Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, and Tokyo within the respective time limits.

Machida crossed the finish line of the Tokyo Marathon in an impressive time of 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 55 seconds, well under the event's cut-off time of 6 hours and 30 minutes. Reflecting on his experience, he remarked how the lively atmosphere and the enthusiastic cheers from the spectators enriched his run, stating, "I felt like I could enjoy a good view while running. It was fun!" This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it was revealed by his sports organization, Achilles International Japan, that he is the first visually impaired Japanese runner to receive this title.

Hiroshi Machida's journey as a runner began in 2013 when he participated in the New York Marathon for the first time after joining Achilles International Japan, an organization that promotes running for disabled athletes. Facing a severe challenge, he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 26 while working as an employee for Yokohama City. The condition led to progressive vision loss, and he became completely blind by the age of 40. "It was shocking, but since it progressed slowly, I was mentally prepared," he recalled. Despite the challenges of losing his sight, including difficulties such as knocking over trash cans and not being able to absorb documents clearly, he managed to work until retirement, aided by voice guidance and support from others.

It was at the age of 50 that Machida discovered a passion for running, initially for health reasons. After joining a running club, he realized the joy of running and gradually participated in various events. Over the years, he has successfully completed five major international marathons. As he eyes new goals, the introduction of the "Seven Star Finisher" title, awarded for completing the world's seven major marathons starting this year with the addition of Sydney, excites him. "Before joining this organization and starting to run marathons, I never thought about going abroad. I want to explore the Southern Hemisphere too," said Machida, looking ahead.

In another significant event for marathon enthusiasts, the "Suzuki Ayako Cup Field of Grain Toyohashi Half Marathon" is set to take place on March 23, 2025, in Toyohashi City. This beloved event attracts runners from across the country, promoting not only local but also national participation.

The excitement surrounding the Toyohashi Half Marathon continues to grow, with a large banner already displayed in front of Toyohashi Station to mark the upcoming event. Organizers highlighted that multiple volunteer staff members and cheering citizens will be present along the course, creating a supportive and friendly atmosphere for all participants. Among the unique features of the marathon is its parallel route alongside the Toyohashi Railway’s city line, adding scenic value to the race.

In preparing for the safety of all attendees, the Toyohashi Half Marathon will have 70 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) strategically placed along the route. Additionally, traffic regulations will be enforced in the areas surrounding the marathon on race day, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Weather conditions on the day of the Toyohashi Half Marathon are forecasted to be clear, promoting a warm and inviting environment for the competitors. Race organizers are hopeful that with sunny skies, participants will enjoy a refreshing run while taking in the charm of Toyohashi’s streets.

The upcoming events showcase the spirit of perseverance and unity in the sporting community, as both Machida’s achievements and the anticipation for the Toyohashi Half Marathon inspire runners to pursue their passions while contributing to a vibrant culture of athletics in Japan.
