Blazej S. Arrested Amid Collegium Humanum Investigation

Former presidential spokesperson faces charges linked to diploma scandal.

The Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) made headlines on Thursday following the arrest of Blazej S., who served as the spokesperson for President Andrzej Duda from 2018 to 2021. The arrest is tied to a significant investigation concerning alleged misconduct at Collegium Humanum, primarily involving fraudulent diploma practices.

Jacek Dobrzyński, the spokesperson for the Minister of Interior and Administration, confirmed the arrest on the social media platform X. "Today, on the order of the Silesian Division for Organized Crime and Corruption of the National Prosecutor's Office, CBA agents arrested Blazej S., the former spokesperson for the President of the Republic," he stated, highlighting the official capacity of the investigation.

Following his arrest, which occurred at dawn, Blazej S. is expected to face several charges. "After completing the procedural actions, the man will be transferred to the branch of the National Prosecutor's Office in Katowice," Dobrzyński added, reinforcing the serious nature of the allegations surrounding the case.

The investigation revolves around Collegium Humanum, now rebranded as the Warsaw Business University, where officials have been accused of selling degrees, including MBA diplomas, often without the requisite educational processes. These diplomas have purportedly allowed many alumni, among them politicians and individuals associated with various political factions, to ascend to high-ranking positions within state-owned enterprises.

The case raises questions not only about the actions of Blazej S. but also about the broader misconduct at Collegium Humanum. Since the inquiry began last year, authorities have arrested numerous individuals connected to the school, including current and former officials. Among those implicated are former European Parliament member Karol Karski and the mayor of Wrocław, Jacek Sutryk, who have also faced scrutiny over their connections to the institution.

Diana Głownia, the current spokesperson for the President's Office, expressed caution following the arrest. "The communication is terse, and little is known about the entire situation, and KPRP does not undertake to assess the situation," she asserted. This cautious stance indicates the administration's desire to distance itself from the developing situation and maintain neutrality as the investigation progresses.

Blazej S. has been affiliated with the Law and Justice party (PiS) since 2004, leading significant political campaigns, including those for Andrzej Duda during his presidential runs. He was appointed as secretary of state and served as the president's spokesperson until September 2021, before transitioning to the role of social advisor to Duda. His connections to high-profile positions within Polish politics add complexity to the investigation, raising concerns about the intertwining of political and educational integrity.

The seriousness of the investigation and the allegations against others associated with Collegium Humanum illuminate potential systemic issues within educational and political frameworks, particularly as many involved have risen to influence through questionable means.

Blazej S. is not alone under scrutiny; the investigation has already extended its reach to numerous well-connected individuals. The CBA, since initiating this investigation, has been aggressive, apprehending dozens of persons tied to the supposed diploma-for-bribes ring, indicating a strong political will to address these allegations head-on.

The ramifications of this case promise to be far-reaching, not only affecting those directly accused but potentially leading to broader calls for reform within educational institutions and their governance. The political fallout from such scandals can lead to wider scrutiny over the conduct of public officials and their academic credentials, serving as both a warning and a motivator for change in how education and qualifications are regulated.

Only time will reveal the full extent of these investigations and whether they will lead to long-awaited reforms or simply serve as another chapter in Poland's complex political narrative.
