BJP Takes Lead As Delhi Votes Counted Amid High Stakes

Early trends show BJP's strength, with parties preparing for possible alliances post-election.

Political tension gripped Delhi as counting commenced for the assembly elections on February 8, 2025, highlighting the fierce rivalry between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). AAP, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, was vying for its third consecutive term against the BJP, which aimed to break its 27-year dry spell in Delhi politics.

Early trends indicated BJP’s Chandra Bhan Paswan was leading the results for the Milkipur by-election, showing over 17,000 votes ahead of his rival from the Samajwadi Party (SP), Ajit Prasad. This by-election serves as not only a test of strength for the BJP but also as significant leverage for their narrative across the state.

Both main parties were engaged in high-stakes movements to secure control, with initial reports from multiple constituencies reflecting the BJP making notable gains. Delhi elections were held for all 70 assembly seats, where voter turnout was reported around 60.54%. Onlookers eagerly awaited results from notable hot seats including Kalkaji, New Delhi and Jangpura.

A spokesperson for the BJP, Virendra Sachdeva, expressed confidence stating, “Delhi has chosen the path of development; the results will be in our favor.” Meanwhile, AAP supporters remained equally hopeful, strategizing for potential outcomes and insisting they would hold on to the seats they won previously.

Security around counting centers remained tight, featuring three-tier setups as the process commenced. The counting was scheduled across 19 centers across 11 districts, with strict surveillance including CCTV. Amid this high-security backdrop, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation as party leaders awaited their fate.

From early trends, AAP's Manish Sisodia was also showing leads from the Ballimaran constituency, reflecting the party’s hold within urban voter bases. It was confirmed by several reports indicating both Kejriwal and Sisodia held positions of strength, particularly across their traditional strongholds.

The complexity of the political fabric was heightened as discussions surfaced about potential coalition formations following the results. Sandip Dikshit, Congress candidate from New Delhi, hinted at this prospect, saying, “If coalition situations arise post-election, the decision will be left to the high command.” Such statements captured the latent political alliances potentially reshaping Delhi's governance.

Further north, similar tensions unfolded during the Milkipur by-election where BJP was also eyeing significant wins. This election emerged as a battle woven with historical significance, reflecting on the prevailing political sentiments since the 2019 elections, especially with the seats within the politically meaningful Ayodhya district. "This by-election has turned out to be prestigious for both BJP and SP,” noted local analysts.

Meanwhile, attention turned to America’s strained diplomatic engagements. President Donald Trump recently withdrew security clearances from former President Joe Biden, stirring controversy amid U.S. internal politics. Trump, asserting his position, indicated, “There is no need for Biden to retain access to sensitive information.”

Close to 60, the atmosphere within the election count centers conveyed unity among parties intending to bring forth their respective agendas for the capital. AAP's Rohini seat held trends where incumbent Vijendra Gupta from BJP capitalized on early lead discussions to bolster campaign narratives.

With results expected to reshape not just Delhi's governance but possibly national discourses, AAP leaders including Gopal Rai expressed optimism amid allegations against BJP of potential malpractices, claiming, “The offers of INR 15 crore to our legislators from BJP will not affect our results.” Reports on these claims culminated to challenge the integrity of the electoral process.

Personalities within the electoral fray, such as BJP’s Pravesh Verma who reported, “We expect to win around 50 seats this time,” appeared convinced of their resurgence policies dating back to previous consecutive electoral failures.

Yet analysts remain skeptical and highlight the narrative built by AAP surrounding governance and public welfare initiatives including healthcare, and education, which played prominent roles during public engagements prior to the elections. A seasoned political analyst reflected, “Delhi’s electorate is pragmatic; they evaluate performance over promises.”

The coming hours are pivotal as each party prepares for the announcement of results, with public gatherings anticipated at major party offices. The overarching tension spoke not only to the present immediacies of election outcome but also to the trajectories these political factions might take based on their success or failure.

Delhi's election results, juxtaposed against Milkipur’s by-election, set the stage for narrative shaping within Indian politics which is expected to resonate well beyond the capital itself. The votes cast resonate with ideological openness and aspirational governance — either vision could inherit the power to sway electoral boundaries come 2027.

With remaining uncertainties hovering over the future configuration of power within Delhi, the atmosphere is thick with speculation and fervor as the world observes India's democratic exercises closely.
