Billy Baldwin Supports Rust Film Release Amid Controversy

Alec Baldwin's brother defends premiere honoring late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins

Alec Baldwin's brother Billy Baldwin has stepped up to defend the release of the film Rust, which has drawn considerable attention and controversy since the tragic on-set shooting incident three years ago.

Set to premiere at the prestigious International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage in Poland this coming November, the film's long-awaited screening marks the first public viewing since cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life during filming. The accident occurred when Baldwin, who was handling what he thought was a prop gun, discharged it, resulting in Hutchins' death and injuring director Joel Souza.

At the Los Angeles premiere of Billy's own project, Americans With No Address, he spoke with reporters, sharing his thoughts on the importance of screening Rust as part of honoring Hutchins' legacy. He emphasized the family's wishes to see her final work completed and recognized by the public. "I think it's great because my understand is, it was the wishes of the family [to have the film shown]," he told TMZ during the event. "They wanted to honor her by having her work finished and having her work seen."

The film was halted during production back in 2021, following the shocking incident. Following the conclusion of filming last year, the release was constantly delayed, but it has now been scheduled for its international debut at the 2024 Camerimage festival, running from November 16 to 23.

Billy Baldwin also mentioned the significance of this screening, indicating it gives people the opportunity to witness Hutchins' talent and contributions to the film industry, something she passionately wanted before her untimely death. According to reports from Deadline, the Ukrainian-born cinematographer wished for the film to be featured at the festival prior to her tragic passing.

Nonetheless, uncertainty remains around Alec Baldwin’s attendance at the festival. Billy confirmed he would not be able to attend due to prior work commitments, and it's still unclear if Alec will be there as well. Earlier this year, Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial was dismissed by the court, with the judge ruling on evidence mismanagement. The prosecution had argued Baldwin's irresponsibility led to the shooting, but his legal team argued he was misled by those overseeing the weapon’s safety on set.

Festival director Marek Zydowicz commented on the significance of the event, noting, "During the festival, we honored Halyna's memory with a moment of silence, and we had discussions about safety on set. Now, together with cinematographers and film enthusiasts, we will have this special opportunity to remembering her."

Alec Baldwin, who has consistently claimed he never pulled the trigger, expressed gratitude to his supporters prior to the film’s completion, stating, "There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now. To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family."

Reflecting on the emotional and professional turmoil he has faced since the incident, Baldwin said following the completion of Rust, "It’s been a long and difficult road. But we reach the end of the trail today."
