Big Lots Set To Reopen 132 Stores Across 14 States

The discount retail chain's revival includes new merchandise and remodeled locations

Big Lots, the well-known discount retail chain, is making a significant comeback in 2025, with plans to reopen 132 stores across 14 states this May. The first wave of openings is set for May 1, followed by a second wave on May 15. This revival comes under the new ownership of Variety Wholesalers, which acquired over 200 Big Lots locations from Gordon Brothers Retail Partners after the chain filed for bankruptcy in late 2024.

The reopening of these stores is a positive sign for the retail sector, especially as many consumers have shown a keen interest in bargain shopping amidst economic uncertainties. North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania lead the list with the most store reopenings, reflecting a strategic focus on regions where Big Lots has historically performed well.

According to Lisa Seigies, the president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, "The customer response to the newly expanded assortment of fresh inventory and great deals has been overwhelmingly positive." She emphasized that the May openings demonstrate a commitment to providing the best value to customers, including family apparel, everyday home necessities, and a wide selection of famous brands.

The reopening strategy involves not just a return to old inventory but a revitalization of the brand. Customers can expect remodeled stores featuring closeout deals and new merchandise categories, including electronics and family clothing. Seigies noted, "We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week, we’ll add more new products." This approach aims to enhance the shopping experience and attract a broader customer base.

Earlier in April, nine Big Lots locations reopened as part of an initial wave, receiving a warm welcome from shoppers. The stores that opened include locations in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The positive feedback from these initial reopenings has fueled excitement for the upcoming waves.

The first wave of reopenings on May 1 will include 54 stores in 12 states, such as Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. This initial batch will be followed by another 78 stores reopening on May 15, with plans for additional openings in June.

Here’s a detailed look at some of the locations reopening on May 1:

  • Alabama: Mobile, Athens, Decatur, Dothan

  • Georgia: Augusta, Brunswick, Buford, Cornelia

  • North Carolina: Elkin, Wilkesboro, Hickory, Gastonia

  • Ohio: Warren, Boardman, Alliance

  • Pennsylvania: Dunmore, Eynon, Lewisburg

  • South Carolina: Rock Hill, Spartanburg, Simpsonville

  • Tennessee: Murfreesboro, Knoxville, Cleveland

  • Virginia: Winchester, Waynesboro, Chesapeake

  • West Virginia: Fairmont, Bridgeport, Charleston

The second wave on May 15 will include additional locations across similar states, further expanding Big Lots’ footprint. Notably, North Carolina will see the highest number of openings, with 27 locations set to welcome back customers.

This revival comes after a tumultuous period for Big Lots, which filed for bankruptcy in September 2024 and announced plans to close all its stores. However, a last-minute deal with Variety Wholesalers allowed the brand to continue operating, albeit with a new vision for the future. The acquisition included not only the stores but also two distribution centers, which will play a crucial role in ensuring inventory availability.

As part of its strategy, Variety Wholesalers is committed to enhancing the overall customer experience. The company operates more than 400 stores under various banners, including Big Lots, Roses Discount Stores, and Maxway. This experience is expected to translate into a fresh approach for Big Lots, focusing on value and variety.

In addition to the excitement surrounding the store reopenings, the company is planning grand opening celebrations for the newly reopened stores in the fall of 2025. This timing is strategic, aligning with back-to-school shopping and the holiday season, which are critical periods for retail sales.

While Big Lots is making strides in its comeback, it is not the only retailer capitalizing on the former Big Lots locations. Other companies, such as Ocean State Job Lot and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, have announced plans to take over some of the shuttered stores, indicating a competitive retail landscape as the economy begins to recover.

As Big Lots prepares for its reopening, customers are encouraged to check the Big Lots website and social media channels for updates on store locations, operating hours, and ongoing promotions. The company’s commitment to providing unbeatable bargains and a diverse selection of products is set to redefine the shopping experience for loyal customers and new shoppers alike.

The resurgence of Big Lots is a testament to the resilience of retail in the face of challenges, showcasing how strategic ownership changes and a renewed focus on customer satisfaction can breathe new life into a brand. With the upcoming store openings, Big Lots is poised to reclaim its place in the discount retail sector, offering shoppers a chance to find great deals and a wide array of products.
