Big Lots Begins Closure Of All Indiana Stores

Retail giant announces going-out-of-business sales as community faces loss.

Big Lots Inc., the discount retailer once known for its overstock values and community presence, has announced it will be closing all its stores across Indiana following the initiation of going-out-of-business sales. This significant move follows several individual store closures earlier this year and reflects the company’s efforts to protect its estate value amid challenging economic circumstances.

Bruce Thorn, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Big Lots, confirmed the announcement during a recent press release, stating, “To protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to begin the (going out of business) process.” Thorn's comments revealed the gravity of the situation as the company engages with Nexus Capital Management, previously attempting to secure future uncertainties through negotiations. Despite the closure declaration, Thorn noted there remains hope for future transactions.

So far, five Big Lots stores have already been shuttered, impacting locations including Indianapolis, Kokomo, Fort Wayne, Elkhart, and Warsaw. Customers and community members have expressed disappointment and concern over losing access to these popular discount options. “It’s tough to see another local store close. Big Lots was always part of our shopping routine,” said one concerned shopper.

Officials want to assure customers their stores and online shopping platforms will remain open as the going-out-of-business sales are implemented. Before the closure of all locations, the remaining stores will hold sales aimed at clearing their inventory. The liquidation process is expected to take place over several weeks or months, depending on the pace of inventory turnover.

For those wondering about remaining locations, the retailer has confirmed several stores will still remain operational for the time being. Here is a list of some of the Big Lots stores still open within the Indianapolis area: 5520 Madison Ave., 1650 E. County Line Road, 10235 E. Washington St., and 6121 Crawfordsville Road.

Beyond Indianapolis, additional locations throughout Indiana where Big Lots will be holding sales include 4358 S. Scatterfield Road, Anderson; 888 Green Boulevard, Aurora; 10321 East U.S. Route 36, Avon; and many others across the state. Locations like Bedford, Bloomington, and even Fort Wayne are impacted as the company moves to liquidate their current stocks to give back to the community during this unfortunate transition.

Many customers have turned to social media already, sharing stories of their favorite finds and memories associated with shopping at Big Lots, showcasing how intertwined the retailer has been within various communities throughout Indiana. “It’s not just about shopping for deals at Big Lots, it’s about the memories and family traditions formed there,” one long-time customer noted.

With the release of this news, the local workforce is also set to feel the repercussions as many employees will face layoffs. Big Lots’ closures come amid broader economic challenges affecting numerous retailers across the country, where inflation, changing consumer habits, and the competitive market have made it increasingly difficult to maintain profitability.

The fate of Big Lots hinges on developments with Nexus Capital Management and any potential buyers willing to take on the brand. Store closures are never easy for communities, but the challenging retail environment has led many companies to reassess their futures to stave off financial disaster.

For the employees who will be affected, the hope remains to support them via transition programs and resources as they seek new employment opportunities moving forward.

Customers and employees alike are encouraged to stay tuned for updates from Big Lots and to participate actively as they benefit from the sales intended for closing out inventory over the upcoming weeks. The retail environment is changing rapidly, and Big Lots' full closure across Indiana is indicative of larger trends affecting the entire industry.

Shopping local matters, especially during times of transition such as these, and we encourage residents to frequent those remaining stores for as long as possible. Big Lots may be closing, but its impact on communities will linger long after the shelves are cleared.
