During his visit to Baltimore shortly after the catastrophe, President Biden declared, "The federal government will cover the full cost of reconstructing the bridge, and I expect Congress to support my efforts." Following the disaster, the Department of Justice filed a $100 million lawsuit against the owners of the cargo ship, Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Private Limited, which the government accuses of negligence due to documented electrical issues prior to the collision. Although the companies agreed to cover over $102 million to assist with recovery costs, they maintain their position of not admitting liability for the incident.
