Biden Pays Tribute To Manmohan Singh's Legacy

A heartfelt acknowledgment of Singh's role in strengthening US-India relations during his tenure as Prime Minister.

President Joe Biden, alongside First Lady Jill Biden, has hailed Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, as a true statesman following the news of his death at the age of 92. Singh, who served two terms as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on December 26, 2023, after battling age-related health issues. His death marked the end of a remarkable career characterized by immense contributions to India's economic reforms and international relations.

Biden released a heartfelt statement expressing his condolences, calling Singh "a dedicated public servant" and praising his pivotal role in fostering the unprecedented level of cooperation between the United States and India. He noted, “The unprecedented level of cooperation between the United States and India today would not have been possible without the Prime Minister’s strategic vision and political courage.” This sentiment highlights how Singh’s leadership was instrumental during key moments, including the landmark US-India Civil Nuclear Agreement.

During his tenure, Singh was celebrated for initiating drastic economic reforms and for enhancing India's global standing. Biden recalled his personal encounters with Singh, mentioning they first met when Biden was Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee back in 2008 and later during Singh’s state visit to Washington as Vice President the following year. The President fondly reminisced about being graciously hosted by Singh during his visit to New Delhi in 2013.

“The US-India relationship is among the most consequential in the world,” Biden noted, emphasizing the importance of this partnership for both nations. The relationship transformed significantly under Singh's leadership, enabling cooperation on various fronts, including security and trade which continue to flourish today. Biden remarked on how Singh’s dedication and vision paved the way for future collaboration, stating, “He charted pathbreaking progress.”

His passing spurred tributes from numerous world leaders, highlighting Singh's respected status not only within India but also abroad. US Ambassador Eric Garcetti lauded Singh's contributions, noting, "He initiated a historic chapter in US-India relations, particularly through the civil nuclear deal." This agreement, which was foundational for the strategic partnership, signified the beginning of new alliances with Indo-Pacific partners.

To honor his memory, the Indian government declared seven days of state mourning. The national flag was flown at half-mast on all government buildings across India as key political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid their last respects. Singh's mortal remains were kept at his residence to allow citizens and public figures to pay their tributes.

Singh's political career was deeply rooted in his stoic economic philosophy and his commitment to public service. He is often credited with transforming the Indian economy through liberalization and progressive reforms, positioning India as a significant player on the global stage. His leadership style was marked by humility and dedication, qualities praised by Biden who underscored, "He was a true statesman. A dedicated public servant. And above all, he was a kind and humble person."

Singh’s influence on US-India relations has been long-lasting, with Biden’s remarks reinforcing the commitment to the vision Singh fought for throughout his life. The cooperation and mutual respect established under Singh's tenure continue to shape the fabric of bilateral ties today.

President Biden concluded by sending heartfelt condolences to Singh’s family, including his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three children. He expressed his hope for lasting peace amid the sorrow, reiteratively emphasizing the legacy of Singh’s contributions to both countries.

Singh will be remembered not only for his political achievements but also for the impact he made by bridging gaps and fostering unity between India and the United States, paving the way for collaborative efforts aimed at addressing global challenges. His passing is mourned not just within India but also across the international community, reflecting the extensive legacy he leaves behind.
