Spain is gearing up for the upcoming Benidorm Fest 2025, where 16 contestants will compete to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest taking place next May in Basel, Switzerland. RTVE, the Spanish national broadcaster, recently unveiled the list of songs during a press conference held at Prado del Rey, igniting excitement among fans.
The festival, running from January 28 to February 1, 2025, will be held at the Palau Municipal d’Esports L’Illa de Benidorm and promises to showcase a diverse array of musical styles. From pop to traditional genres, the selections appear broader and more eclectic than ever, aiming to captivate both the national audience and Eurovision voters.
Notable artists this year include the beloved veteran Melody, renowned for her childhood hit "El Baile del Gorila." Her latest entry, "Esa Diva," aims to redefine what it means to be a 'diva,' with lyrics emphasizing strength and simplicity. Melody remarked, "A diva is simple, brave, and doesn’t step on anyone to shine."
Another strong contender is Chica Sobresalto with her song "Mala Feminista." Through daring and thought-provoking lyrics, she tackles the nuances of feminism, addressing societal pressures on women. "No me alegro por ti ni por esa nueva novia tuya, me arriesgo a perder el carnet de nueva feminista" ("I don't rejoice for you or your new girlfriend; I risk losing my new feminist card"), she pointedly sings, alluding to the complications of modern empowerment.
Carla Frigo, at just 22 years old, is making waves with her entry "Bésame," which she describes as explosive yet sensual, talking about the electric tension when one meets someone special. She shared, "It speaks to the sexual tension you feel when getting to know someone."
With 1,000 submissions pouring in, the selection process was competitive. The judges included notable music industry figures like Beatriz Luengo, who has publicly endorsed the festival’s mission to showcase artistic diversity and support artists. The event's directors voiced their enthusiasm, emphasizing the festival's role as nurturing ground for both established and rising talents.
Maria Eizaguirre, RTVE's Director of Communication and Participation, mentioned the festival's significance, "This year marks our effort to create engaging activities, including EuroClubES and Tapa Fest, alongside the main event, to strengthen our community’s connection to Eurovision."
Responding to recent environmental events, such as the Dana de Valencia storms, organizers decided not to roll out the usual red carpet, but instead to focus on fundraising and community support. "This festival is about solidarity and celebration, ensuring our event remains inclusive and uplifting," noted César Vallejo, co-director of the event.
