On May 8, 2025, Benidorm celebrated a significant milestone: the 700th anniversary of its foundation. A municipal corporation gathered to commemorate this historic occasion, which traces back to the signing of the Carta Pobla by Almirante Bernat de Sarrià on the same date in 1325. This document established Benidorm as an independent municipality, separate from the Barony of Polop.
During the commemorative event, Mayor Toni Pérez emphasized the importance of unity among citizens, urging them to come together to "win the future of Benidorm and future generations" and to continue serving as a "benchmark of happiness for millions of people." His speech highlighted key moments in the town's history over the past seven centuries.
Pérez reflected on Benidorm's evolution, recalling its rich nautical heritage and the arrival of the Mare de Deú del Sofratge, which marked the beginning of the town's tourism activities. He noted that the latter half of the 20th century and the early 21st century have been particularly prosperous for Benidorm, attributing its growth as a premier tourist destination to the hard work of many individuals.
In recognition of its accomplishments, Benidorm received the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism distinction from the European Commission in 2025. This accolade underscores the city's commitment to sustainable tourism and innovation.
The celebration also included the presentation of a commemorative stamp dedicated to Benidorm's 700 years of history, unveiled by Correos during the municipal assembly. This stamp is the first in a new philatelic series titled "New Cities," honoring the cultural legacy and communication history of the region.
As part of the ongoing celebrations, the Plaça de Sant Jaume is set to host a representation of the Carta Pobla on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 21:30, performed by the Grup Carta de Poblament of the Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge. This event will feature music from a group of ancient instruments, adding a unique cultural dimension to the festivities.
The mayor expressed that the process of securing the stamp has been lengthy, describing it as a tribute to the cultural heritage of Spain and the historical significance of communication. Pérez also highlighted the essence of this commemoration, filled with events and activities designed to educate and reflect on the foundation of Benidorm.
Continuing the anniversary agenda, the festivities will feature a performance of the play "Pudo suceder" at the Casa del Fester on the evening of the anniversary. The city's landmarks, including the catenary of the Levante promenade and El Castell, will be illuminated in the colors of Benidorm to mark this special day.
On Sunday, May 11, 2025, the Societat Musical l’Illa de Benidorm will perform a concert at 19:00 in the Auditorium of the Cultural Center, further enriching the celebratory atmosphere. Additionally, the weekend will host the "Benidorm Medieval" market near the Parque de Elche, featuring numerous stalls and entertainment.
Finally, on Sunday, May 18, a concert will take place at the church of Sant Jaume i Santa Anna at 20:00, showcasing the talents of the Capella de Ministrers. These events are part of a broader effort to recognize, explore, and celebrate the historical significance of Benidorm's foundation.
As the celebrations unfold, the community reflects on its past while looking forward to a promising future, united in the spirit of heritage and progress.
