Bengaluru FC Edges Past Chennaiyin FC 3-2

A thrilling encounter at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium sees Ryan Williams' brace secure three pivotal points for the Blues.

Bengaluru FC triumphed over Chennaiyin FC 3-2 on December 28, 2024, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, keeping their title ambitions alive. This Indian Super League (ISL) encounter showcased the competitive spirit and tactical prowess of both teams as they battled for precious points.

The Blues, currently second on the points table with 24 points from 12 matches, entered this clash following their impressive ability to claw back for a 2-2 draw against FC Goa. Chennaiyin FC, on the other hand, struggled at ninth place with just 15 points, having faced inconsistencies throughout the season, including losses in four out of their last five matches.

"Chennaiyin are a strong team. They have a different style of play and are dangerous with their crosses and set-pieces. We need to be..." remarked Bengaluru FC coach Gerrard Zaragoza, acknowledging the challenge. Despite their low standing, Chennaiyin has often proven to be formidable opponents, especially when playing at home, where they sought to rally support from their faithful fans.

The match kicked off at 7:30 PM IST and saw immediate action as Bengaluru’s Ryan Williams found the net first with a composed finish in the 16th minute, converting from Jorge Pereyra Diaz's assist. Chennaiyin quickly reacted, equalizing just minutes later through Irfan Yadwad, who capitalized on some defensive lapses to level the score.

This electrifying pace continued throughout the first half. Bengaluru took the lead again just before half-time with Sunil Chhetri scoring on the 43rd minute, but Chennaiyin's Lalrinliana Hnamte responded with his own header, bringing the teams to 2-2 at the break.

Although both teams displayed attacking intent, the second half revealed tactical adjustments. Chennaiyin opted for a 4-4-2 formation featuring Daniel Chima Chukwu and Yadwad as forwards, aiming to exploit the flanks, where they were met by Bengaluru's disciplined defense.

After the interval, Bengaluru regained their momentum, scoring the decisive goal when Ryan Williams struck again, this time seizing the opportunity after poor clearance from Chennaiyin. Williams's left-footed shot from inside the box rolled smoothly to the bottom left corner, putting Bengaluru up 3-2.

Owen Coyle, the Chennaiyin coach, had emphasized before the match, "We have to be more clinical, have more composure in front of goals..." hoping his players could shift the match's momentum. Unfortunately for the Marina Machans, their defensive frailties reared their heads once again. The team struggled to maintain possession under pressure, which has been a recurring issue this season.

Despite the setback, Chennaiyin showed resilience and continued to press, winning several free-kicks and corner opportunities, particularly through dynamic winger Lukas Brambilla. Coyle's substitution strategy aimed to inject fresh energy and urgency but couldn’t tip the scales back to Chennaiyin's favor.

The match had various tactical nuances, as Bengaluru focused on maintaining control and hitting on the counter. This strategy paid off, as Sunil Chhetri, supported by players like Ryan Williams and Edgar Mendez, orchestrated key attacks. The statistical highlight of Bengaluru's season so far is scoring multiple goals consistently, which they showcased again.

Fans watching on the Sports18 network and the JioCinema platform were treated to a thrilling spectacle with high stakes as both teams aimed to solidify their placement for the playoffs. The head-to-head records favored Bengaluru, who had won eight of the last fifteen encounters against Chennaiyin and sought to extend this dominance.

After the match, the mood remained between caution and optimism. Following the matchup, Gerrard Zaragoza stated, “I always say this is a marathon, sometimes you go up, you need to pause for a couple of minutes, and go again.” His optimism was palpable as the team looks to turn the slated outcomes of the remaining fixtures around.

Meanwhile, Chennaiyin's campaign needs revitalization, with Owen Coyle stressing the importance of home games as they move forward, stating, “We have a lot of home games coming next year, and they will change the dynamics.” The Marina Machans will hope to turn their fortunes around as they regroup after this latest setback, eyeing improvements to their playoff ambitions.

With this win, Bengaluru FC cements its position as serious contenders for the ISL title, striving to maintain pressure on leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who sit five points ahead. The loss keeps Chennaiyin FC searching for answers as Coach Coyle navigates the tumultuous waters of team form and consistency.
