Ben Affleck Recalls His Dubbed Role In Buffy Movie

Charisma Carpenter clarifies her comments about the Buffy reboot amid media misinterpretations.

In a surprising revelation, actor Ben Affleck has opened up about his brief and somewhat infamous role in the 1992 film Buffy, tueuse de vampires (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Affleck, who played a minor character in the film, disclosed that his performance was so poorly received that he was dubbed over during production. This revelation came to light during an interview on The Jess Cagle Show in 2020, where he humorously recounted his experience.

Affleck shared, "Apparently, I’m really bad in this movie. I had one line, which was ‘Prends-le’ (Take it), I believe. I went to see the film and thought, ‘That’s not my voice, that’s not me.’ The director hated my performance so much that she changed the scene, which consisted of just one line. So yes, I was dubbed… in English!" This candid reflection on his early career has since sparked interest among fans of the Buffy franchise.

The film Buffy, tueuse de vampires was directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui and served as a precursor to the iconic television series that followed, created by Joss Whedon. While the film laid the groundwork for the series, it is often regarded as non-canonical. Nevertheless, some elements from the film were referenced in the later TV show that became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Interestingly, Affleck was not the only actor with a small role in the film. Seth Green, who later gained fame as Oz in the TV series, also made an appearance as a vampire, although his scene ended up on the cutting room floor. Green's involvement was notable enough to earn him a spot on the original VHS cover, despite his absence in the final cut.

In recent news, Charisma Carpenter, known for her role as Cordelia Chase in the Buffy series, has taken to TikTok to clarify her statements regarding a potential return to the franchise. Carpenter expressed her frustration over media misinterpretations of her comments about the upcoming reboot of Buffy contre les vampires. During a Comic Con event in Indiana, she was asked about her involvement in the reboot and responded with optimism.

Carpenter stated, "I hope so. From what I understand, there isn’t even a pilot at the moment, but if I were to be involved, I hope it would be in a substantive way. That would be my dream. I think it would be very poetic to be invited back, especially with the original team involved—the best parts of it, like Gail Berman—and having Chloé Zhao direct—an Oscar winner and an incredible talent. Plus, with the Zuck sisters as exceptional writers and, of course, Sarah backing it, I truly hope to be a part of it." Her comments were meant to convey excitement about the possibility of returning, rather than setting conditions for her participation.

However, Carpenter was dismayed to find that some journalists had twisted her words, suggesting she had placed conditions on her return. In her TikTok video, she clarified, "I never said I wouldn’t return for a simple cameo. I would love to come back for a cameo or, if possible, for a more significant role." This misrepresentation has left Carpenter feeling vulnerable, as she explained, "I feel completely violated and concerned because there is a huge error. It could cost me a job."

Carpenter's emotional response highlights the impact of sensationalized journalism. She expressed her distress, stating, "It’s incredibly stressful to see someone distort your words and make you appear ungrateful, problematic, or aggressive." She emphasized the importance of journalistic integrity, urging reporters to remember that behind every headline is a real person. Carpenter stated, "This series is one of the greatest parts of my adult life. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into this series. Revisiting it under this new direction would be an incredible opportunity and allow for healing."

In her TikTok video, Carpenter called on journalists to approach their work with empathy and responsibility, acknowledging the potential harm that can arise from misrepresentation. "I want to clarify for my fans and anyone in production that I have not placed any conditions on my return to the reboot. I have not given the impression that I do not want a small cameo," she reiterated.

As the Buffy reboot gathers momentum, both Affleck's and Carpenter's experiences serve as reminders of the challenges faced by actors in the entertainment industry, particularly regarding public perception and media portrayal. The upcoming project, which is still in its early stages, has sparked excitement among fans eager to see familiar faces return, while also raising questions about how the original cast will be integrated into the new narrative.

With the potential for a revival of the beloved series, fans are left wondering how the new version will honor the legacy of the original while addressing the complexities of its past. Carpenter's passionate plea for accuracy in reporting and her desire to return to a role that shaped her career resonate with many who have followed her journey since the show's inception.

As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, the importance of truthful representation in media remains paramount. Carpenter's experience serves as a poignant reminder of the power of words and the responsibility that comes with them. The journey of Buffy, tueuse de vampires and its legacy continues to inspire discussions about creativity, authenticity, and the impact of storytelling in all its forms.
