Beloved Squid Game Actress Lee Joo-sil Dies At 81

Fans mourn as the veteran actress loses battle with stomach cancer just months after diagnosis.

Lee Joo-sil, the beloved South Korean actress known for her role as Park Mal-soon in the Netflix sensation "Squid Game," has died at the age of 81. According to reports from the Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo, Lee passed away at her family home in Uijeongbu on February 2, 2025.

The cause of her death was complications associated with stomach cancer, which she was diagnosed with only three months prior, around November 2024. Sadly, this was not Lee's first encounter with cancer. Approximately 30 years ago, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and was initially told she had less than one year to live. Remarkably, she battled the disease for 13 years, eventually overcoming it. Lee spoke about the strength one finds during crises, saying, "Everyone becomes stronger when faced with a crisis. If you let everything go, you become helpless. I was grateful for...that kind of thinking," as reported by The Chosun Ilbo.

Lee Joo-sil was not just renowned for her roles on screen; she was also celebrated for her work on stage. Born on March 8, 1944, Lee began her career as a stage actress, debuting in 1964. Throughout her prolific career, she starred alongside notable actors and received widespread acclaim for her versatility. One of her most memorable roles came from the 2016 blockbuster film "Train to Busan," where she played the mother of protagonist Seok-woo, portrayed by Gong Yoo. Her involvement with projects like the action-packed K-drama "The Uncanny Counter" and the beloved film "Roaring Currents" earn her recognition far beyond her involvement with "Squid Game.”

Impressively, even during her recovery from breast cancer, Lee earned her doctoral degree in Public Health from Wonkwang University in 2010, underscoring her dedication to continuous learning and resilience.

Lee's passing has left many heartbroken within the entertainment industry and among her vast audience. The actress featured prominently in the second season of "Squid Game,” portraying the mother of detective Hwang Jun-ho, played by Wi Ha-joon. Some reports suggest she appeared in the first two episodes of this anticipated season, which debuted just over one month before her death. Her character was integral to the show's storyline, and fans have reflected on the emotional weight her performances carried.

Fans and colleagues expressed their condolences on social media, mourning the loss of not just a talented actress but also a beloved figure known for her warmth and wisdom. Lee’s funeral service is scheduled for February 5, 2025, at Severance Hospital, allowing her supporters to pay their respects.
