Hundreds gathered to pay their respects to beloved singer Linda Nolan at St. Paul’s Church in Blackpool this past Saturday, where family, friends, and fans celebrated her remarkable life after she passed away last month at the age of 65. Widely known as part of the iconic pop group The Nolans, Linda's funeral was marked with emotional tributes, celebrity attendance, and heartfelt memories shared by her family.
Linda Nolan, who battled cancer and pneumonia for several years, was remembered fondly by her siblings, including Anne, Coleen, Denise, and Maureen, during the poignant service. The family encouraged fans to partake in the service, honoring Linda's final wish to open the event to those whose lives she touched. Anne Nolan, visibly moved, expressed how Linda would have loved the turnout, saying, "It was very emotional, very sad, but on the other hand it was kind of joyous as well". She recalled how, at the funeral, they were struck by the sheer number of fans lining the streets as they arrived.
The service featured Linda’s unique pink glittery coffin, which was her own idea, according to Anne. It included some of her favorite songs, capturing the essence of her spirit, with Anne sharing, "We played a song of her singing I'll Never Leave You...that was when I actually lost it, it was so sad." Attendees were also treated to remembrances of Linda's fun personality, including her fondness for the dramatic and humorous aspects of life, as Anne shared about Linda's playful request for her family to wear mantillas, expressing doubt about whether she was serious.
Denise Nolan-Anderson delivered moving remarks at the service, recalling Linda's love for glamorous events: "She really loved going to premieres and opening nights, having her beautiful hair and make-up done, and always was the life and soul of any big occasion. She would have loved all the fuss today." Her words echoed among the mourners, painting a picture of Linda’s infectious spirit and strong character. Denise added, "It's time to rest now Linda. The battle is over, you are free."
The community’s outpouring of love did not go unnoticed. Outside the church, as the coffin was carried to lively applause from fans, the atmosphere was filled with both sadness and celebration. Emblematic of Linda's strength was the pink ribbon, which many attendees wore to symbolize breast cancer awareness. The sight of mourners, some dressed entirely in black, others carrying pink accessories, provided deep resonance with Linda’s battle against cancer, as she had been diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2005. After initially achieving remission, she faced recurrences of the disease, which led to secondary diagnoses until her final moments.
Linda's contributions to charity were also highlighted during the service. Throughout her life, she raised over £20 million for various cancer awareness charities, such as Breast Cancer Now, and the Irish Cancer Society, always striving to help those facing similar battles. Her family is now continuing her legacy by inviting donations to Trinity Hospice, where Linda received care during her final days. They have already raised over £2,800 through the Much Loved memorial site.
Among the renowned faces at the funeral were celebrities like Shane Richie and comedian Paul Chuckle, paying their respects and sharing fond memories. Paul expressed the depth of his sorrow, noting, "She was just a fun, bubbly person. The world’s a darker place without her."
Throughout her illustrious career, Linda was more than just a member of The Nolans; she was also cherished for her television appearances and musical theatre performances. From writing for the Daily Mirror to finding fame on reality television show CBB, Linda made her mark far beyond the pop charts. Despite the challenges she faced due to her health, she remained steadfast and fought bravely, embodying grace and tenacity until her passing.
The service concluded with attendees signing condolence books placed outside the church, affirming the mark Linda Nolan left on so many lives. Her family continues to cherish their memories of her incredible spirit and humor, reflecting on how she met life’s challenges with laughter and resilience. Linda's spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire those she loved and countless fans as well. There's no denying: she will be sorely missed.
