Renowned Romanian actor Mircea Diaconu has passed away on December 14, 2024, at the age of 74, shortly before his 75th birthday on December 24. Diaconu succumbed to aggressive colon cancer after battling the disease for some time, leaving behind a rich legacy marked by significant contributions to both Romanian theater and cinema.
The announcement of his passing was made by his wife, actress Diana Lupescu, which was later confirmed by respected Teatrul Nottara, where Diaconu served as director from 2001 to 2011. “Cei care doresc să îi aducă un ultim omagiu sunt aşteptați luni, 16 decembrie, între orele 11:00-16:00, la Teatrul Nottara, unde va fi depus. Mircea Diaconu a fost unul dintre cei mai importanți actori ai scenei și ecranului românesc... Odihnească-se în pace!” the theater stated, expressing condolences to his family and fans.
Diaconu's funeral is set to take place on December 17 at the cemetery in Săftica, with only close family and friends expected to attend. Born on December 24, 1949, in Vlădești, Argeș County, he began his theater career at the Bulandra Theater, and his first on-screen performance came just two years later.
Celebrated for his powerful performances, Diaconu acted in some sixty films throughout his career and became well-regarded as one of the most talented figures of Romanian performing arts. He starred in some iconic productions, including the famous classic “Buletin de București,” and the popular comedies “Filantropica” and “Nunta de piatră.”
His work often elicits fond memories from colleagues and cinema enthusiasts alike. Notably, film critic Irina Margareta Nistor remarked, “A jucat extrem de multe roluri, şi la teatru... A figure not just on stage and screen, Diaconu also ventured successfully to politics. He was active during the Romanian anti-communist revolution and later co-founded the Civic Alliance. His political career included serving as senator with the National Liberal Party from 2008 to 2012 and he briefly held the position of Minister of Culture. Although he faced challenges concerning conflicts of interest during his ministerial role, he continued to engage with the arts community.
